Gentlemen:
Submitted herein is a report of observations and tests performed
during placement and compaction of fill at the subject site.
Field densitv tests are presented in Table I, "Results of
Compaction Tests". Test locations are shown on the attached Site
Plan, Plate 1. The Civil Engineer and grading contractor were
Rick Engineering, Co., and Dunphy Construction, respectively.
Mass grading was started and completed to finished grade during
the period covered by this report, September 4 to September 17.
1987.
1 .o SCOPE OF WA“-.
In-grading services consisted of the following items:
a. Observation of site preparation.
b. Observation and testing of fill placement.
C. Preparation of this report.

2.0 GRADING OPERATION
Grading on this project was based upon the lines, grades,
and layouts which are shown on "Grading Plan for Kaiser
Electra-Optics" by Rick Engineering Company. Grading
procedures were essentially as follows:
a. Removals of surficial vegetation, trash, etc.
b. Moisture conditioning, scarification, and recompaction
of approximately 6 inches of exposed natural subgrade
soils.
C. Placement, moisture conditioning, and compaction of
on-site soils in uniform lifts.
3.0 GEOLOGIC SETTING
The geology of the site consists of Santiago Formation
sandstone, and claystone. Groundwater was not encountered
at the time of the preliminary investigation, or during
grading.
4.0 SOIL TYPES
On-site soils consisted primarily of gray to brown, silty
sand, clayey sand and sandy clay. Table II presents a
tabulation of the soil descriptions and relevant engineering
properties.

5.0 FILL PLACEMENT
Fill was placed in 6 to g-inch lifts, brought to approxi-
mately optimum moisture content, and compacted to a minimum
of 90 percent of maximum dry density as determined by ASTM:
D1557-78. The maximum fill depths were about 3 feet.
Equipment used for compaction consisted of a bulldozer and
scraper for spreading, and a sheepsfoot and blade for
compaction and leveling. Grading operations were started
and completed during the period covered by this report.
Moisture and density tests were made in accordance with ASTM
D1556-82 (Sand Cone Method) and ASTM D2922-81 and D3017-78
(Nuclear Method). Maximum Density and optimum moisture
content determinations of the various soils are present in
Table II, "Laboratory Test Results."
6.0 CONCLUSIONS
Based on the results of the observations and testing noted
herein, it is our opinion that the grading and compaction
was performed in general accordance with our recom-
mendations. The conditions at the site was found to be
consistent with those indicated in the referenced
qeotechnica~l evaluation. Therefore. the recommendations
contained in the referenced report are valid and should be
fully complied with.
Utility trench and/or wall backfill consisting of the
on-site material types should be placed by mechanical
compaction to a minimum of 90 percent of maximum density
(ASTM D1557). -

All foundation excavations should be observed by the Soils
Engineer prior to placement of forms, reinforcement or to
determine that soil bearing conditions are as anticipated.
All excavations should be trimmed neat, level, and square.
All loose or slough material should be removed prior to the
placement of concrete. Materials from footing excavations
should not be spread in slab-on-grade areas unless compacted
to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent (ASTM D1557).
7.0 LIMITATION OF INVESTIGATION
Our description of grading operations, as well as
observations and testing services herein, have been limited
to those grading operations performed between September 4,
and September 17, 1987. No representations are made as to
the quality or extent of materials not observed, or for any
subsequent changes made to this site.
Elevations and test locations noted in the attached Table I
are estimated from field surveys done by others. Based upon
our observations and testing, it is our opinion, as afore-
mentioned, that the work performed has been accomplished in
accordance with our recommendations as well as the
requirements of the regulating agencies. This report should
be considered sub.ject to review by the controlling
authorities. ~--'
Professional judqements represented in this report are based
partly on our evaluations of the technical information
gathered, our understanding of the proposed construction,
and our general experience in the geotechnical field. Our
engineering work and judgements rendered meet or exceed the
standard of care of our profession at this time. No other
warranty, expressed or implied, is made as to the
conclusions and professional advice included in this report.
