Gentlemen:
Per the request of Mr. Jack Tolenar we have performed a cursory
inspection at the subject site.
The inspection was performed for the purpose of estimating design
~parameters for the planned development.
On November 17, 1983 a field investigation was performed which
included an inspection of the site and the excavation of one hand auger boring to a depth of 18" below existing grade. Location of ,test pit is deliniated on attached Plate, No. 1, entitled "Test
Pit Location Sketch." The test pit was located in the field,
utilizing the site plan prepared by Steve Lane.
Laboratory tests performed on representative samples were optimum
moisture, maximum density and potential expansion. The results
of these tests are tabulated on attached Plate No. 2.
Subsequent to o~ur inspection of the site, we anticipate the
following recommendations.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. It is our understanding minimal grading (cut and fills under 5' in height) will be utilized. We,
therefore, recommend all slopes be constructed at a minimum ratio of 2:l (horizontal to vertical units.)
2. Expansive soil conditions observed during our inspec- tions will require special recommendations to reduce structural damage occurring from excessive subgrade and foundation movement.
Recommendations set forth will reduce the probability of future
damage and should be strictly adhered to:

It is highly recommended that the building area be capped with a minimum of 24 inches of non-expansive material. Capping should
be carried to a minimum of five feet beyond the exterior building
perimeter. Therefore, conventional construction may be
utilized.
In~ the event that capping is not economical recommendations
should be as follows:
In the case of slab on grade construction, all continuous
footings should be founded a minimum of 24 inches below lowest
adjacent grade. In the' case of raised floor construction,
exterior perimeter footings should be continuous and founded a minimum of 24 inches below lowest adjacent grade. Isolated
interior footings should be founded a minimum of 24 inches below lowest interior grade.
Continuous footings should be reinforced with two No. 4 bars top and bottom. Steel should be positioned 3 inches above bottom of footing and 1 inch below top of footing or finish floor.
Interior' slabs should be 4 inches thick, reinforced with lO/lO, 6 x 6 welded wire mesh, and underlain with a 4 inch base
consisting of sand or crushed rock. Sand should be tested in
accordance with ASTM D2419 to insure a minimum sand equivalent of 30. Slab reinforcing should be extended~through joints and
provide a tension tie with perimeter footings. If this method
proves impractical during construction, an alternative method may
be employed. This method consists of No. 3 bars, 30 inches on
center, extending 30 bar diameters into both slab and foundation.
Clayey soils should not be allowed to dry prior to placing concrete. They should be sprinkled to insure they are kept in a
very moist condition or at a moisture content exceeding optimum
moisture content by a minimum of 3 percent.
Prior to pouring concrete, we should be contacted to document the aforementioned construction details have been adhered to.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. This opportunity to be of service is sincerely appreciated.
Respectfully submitted,
