Engineering Department
At your request, we have provided engineering services in connection
with the widening of the roadway pavement sections at the subject
project site. These services consisted of preconstruction consultation
with the grading and pavinq contractor resarding pavement design sec-
tions, materials, grading, and compaction requirements, and of taking field density tests of emplaced subbase and base course materials
upon call of the contractor during construction.
Site preparation, and'subbase and base course placement, compaction,
and testing were done durina the period of February 12 to February 27, 1970. Results of field density tests indicate that subbase course ma&eri, alshave been compacted to an average relativGX?iipaction of approximately 95Jp%?rco.nt, with a minimum relative compaction of 94
percent; and tfiat base course materials have been placed at a minimum relative compaction-% 95 percent. The results of field density tests *- ~~. ~~~f-~relattve'~~~mpactlon, expressed as a percentage of maximum lab-
oratory density, are given on the attached forms.
Materials used for subbase and base courses were obtained from the.,t$sa
Pit and the Thibodq Pit, respectively. Results of Mechanical Analysis ~(GratRSiXW~bution) and Sand equivalent tests on representative
samples of the materials from both these pits, as well as an R-Value
test and a Laboratory Compaction test to determine maximum dry density
and optimum moisture content for the Thibodo Pit materials, were reported
in our letter of December 23, 1969. Results of the Laboratory Compaction test of representative Mesa Pit materials, which was made subsequent to the decision to use these materials as subbase, in order to deter-
mine moisture-density relationships, maximum dry density and optimum
moisture content, are attached herewith.

Based on the test results and on our observation of the compacted
materials, it is our opinion that the subbase and base courses have
been placed in general conformance with our recommended pavement design Alternates 3, as presented in our letters of November 20 and December 23, 1969. The conclusions and opinions drawn from the tests
and site inspections aoply to conditions as represented at the date of
our final insoection. Fe can acceot no responsibility for any subsequent
changes which may have occurred during excavation for and emplacement
of curbs, or by failure of others to properly repair any damaaes which
may have been caused by uncontrolled action of water prior to placement of the asphalt surface course.
If we can be of further service, please contact us at your convenience.
