Subject: Final Clearance Report on Compacted Filled Ground
Dear Mr. Hancock:
In compliance with your request, an investigation was made at the reference
site to determine the degree of compaction of exsisting fill ground. We have
also observed the placing and tested additional fill ground placed on the site
during the period May 24 to Jure 9, 1967.
A visual inspection of the exsisting fill ground was made on May 23, 1967.
No indication of settlement or sliding of the in-place fill was found. Loose
fiIl material was found along the face of the exsisting northerIy ii11 slope.
It appears this loose fill has been pushed over the edge of the original
building pad.
A test pit, at the approximate location shown on the enclosed Plot Plan,
was excavated in the exsisting fill ground. Field density tests were tak-
en at various depths in the excavation to determine the degree of com-
pat tion.
The results of our tests indicate the exsisting in-place fill is satisfactor-
ily compacted.
Prior to placing any new fill, the area to be filled was cleared of all veg-
etation, scarified, watered and recompacted to not less than 90 percent of the
maximum dry density to provide a bond between the in-place soil and the
fill material to be placed.
Imported fill was placed in six (6) inch layers, and compacted to not less
than 90 percent of the maximum density by means of a sheepsfoot roller, RECEIVED

-.
The maximum depth of fill placed is approximately three (3) feet.
Field density tests were taken every one(l) foot in vertical height
of fill placed to insure complete control of the operations. The re-
sults and locations of the field density tests are reported on the
following enclosures to this report:
Laboratory compaction tests were performed on samples of the ex-
sisting fill material and imparted fill material. The soils were tested
according to the A. S. T. M. Designation 1557-58T method which uses
25 blows of a 10 pound hammer dropping 18 inches on each of five (5)
layers in a 4-inch diameter, l/30 cubic foot meld. A summary of
the results of the tests are presented as follows:

The compacted fill soils will safely support, without detrimental set-
tlement, l-foot wide continuous footings loaded to 1000 pounds per
square foot when founded at the minimum required depth below the
lowest adjacent ground surface and placed ten (10) feet or more in-
side the top of the northerly compacted fill ground slope. If foot-
ings are placed closer to the exposed slope than ten (10) feet inside
the top of the northerly compacted fill ground slope, they should be
deepened one (1) foot below a 1 If2 horizontal to 1 vertical line pro-
jected outward and downward from a point ten (10) feet horizontally
inside the top of the compacted fill ground slope.
We recommend all continuous footings be reinforced with at least two
(2) continuous No. 4 deformed reinforcing bars. One bar should
be placed within four inches (4”) of the bottom of the footing and one
within four inches (4”) of the top of the footing. This recommenda-
tion is in order to minimize cracking and should not be construed as
a footing design.
To safeguard against erosion, exposed slopes should be planted.
Additional protection devices, such as top berms and drainage swales
are recommended where applicable to further minimize erosion.
Respectfully, submitted,
