Subject: Report of in-Place Density Testing
Project: Jefferson Bike Lane
Carlsbad, California
Contract No. 3156
Federal Project No. 11-SD-0-Cbd
Dear Mr. Cook: .
In accordance with your authonzation, we have performed in-place density testing services
associated with retaining wall construction and roadway construction for the Jefferson Street Bike
Lane construction project in Carlsbad, California. The scope of our services consisted of in-place
density testing of.retaining wall backfill sections, subgrade, aggregate base and asphalt paving;
laboratory tests for moisture-density curves of the fill, backfill, subgrade, and aggregate base;
laboratory tests for maximum density of asphaltic concrete; and preparation of this summary of test
results. In-place density testing was performed on a part-time, "as-called" basis at the direction of
the City's construction inspector. Our services were performed from March 22, 1995 through April
11,1995.
The maximum dry density and optimum. moisture content,of samples of fill, backfill, subgrade,,and
base materials were evaluated in our laboratory in general. accordance with ASTM test procedure D
1557. The maximum density of asphaltic concrete was evaluated in our laboratory in accordance
with Caltrans test methods 304 and 308. The results. of the, tests are presented in Table 1 entitled
"Maximum Density Test Results." ....... . :.. . . . ..
In-place density tests of materials were performed rn general accordance with ASTM test procedure
D 1;556. (sand cone method) and test.proceduresASTM.D 2922 and ASTM D .301.7. (in-place
density and in-place moisture content, respectively). Project specifications called for 95% relative
compaction of subgrade within the upper six inches. At the direction of the city's construction
inspector, the 95% relative compaction of subgrade 'was waived in lieu of accepting 90% relative

compaction for the subgrade. The results of these tests at the specified location tested are presented
in Table 2 entitled "Compaction Test Summary."
Testing was performed at the direction of the City of Carlsbad's inspector, and results of the in-
place density tests were generally reported to the inspector in the field at the time of testing. Our
tests were provided on a part-time basis. Therefore, we cannot comment that all materials have
been placed and compacted in accordance with the project specifications.
Our services have been performed in accordance with the generally accepted testing practices that
exist in the Carlsbad area at this time. No warranty, express or implied, is made.
We appreciate the opportunity to be of service. If you have any questions or need additional
information, please contact the undersigned.
Sincerely,

* This test did not meet the initial project requirement of 95% relative compaction, but was accepted at the direction of the
city's engineering department.
Accepted engineering and testing procedures were used for these tests. The above data is presented for information purposes only. In the absence of continuous
observations of our personnel at the site, we can not express an opinion as to the adequacy of site preparation or overall fill compaction. We do not undertake the
guarantee of construction, nor do we relieve the contractor of his primary reponsibility to produce a completed project conforming to the project plans and
specifications.
