Reference: Results of California Gnatcatcher Surveys for the Faraday Avenue Extension
(RECON Number 3169B)
Dear Ms. Howard:
This letter describes the results of surveys for the federally threatened coastal California
gnatcatcher (Polioptila calzfornica californica) on the Faraday Avenue extension site. Surveys
were conducted in compliance with the monitoring program for the Faraday Avenue extension.
This letter also satisfies the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) permit reporting conditions.
The Faraday Avenue extension is located in the City of Carlsbad (Figures 1 and 2)
Methods
I conducted surveys during the month of January 2000. Surveys were conducted within the areas of
coastal sage scrub within 250 feet of the Faraday Avenue extension. These surveys were conducted
according to USFWS coastal California gnatcatcher survey guidelines (USFWS 1997). Table 1
details the survey dates, times, and weather conditions of the focused surveys. The surveys were
conducted by slowly walking through all areas of suitable habitat on the site and listening and
looking for the California gnatcatcher. The surveys were conducted under permit PRT-8 11615.
