Subject: Protocol Coastal California (3natcatcher Survey Results, Lake Calavera, City of
Carlsbad, San Diego County, California (LSA Project No. HCR1004)
Dear Ms. Marquez and Ms.Comrack:
This letter report documents the results of protocol coastal California gnatcatcher (Polioptila
cal9fornica ca4fornica) surveys conducted by LSA Associates, Inc. (LSA) within the City of Carlsbad,
California (see attached Figure 1). The survey area is surrounded to the northwest by 'Knollwood
Drive, to the northeast by Sky Haven Lane, and to the south by Lake Calavera. Portions of the survey
area were vegetated by coastal sage scrub Two pairs of coastal California gnatcatchers were detected
during three protocol surveys.
SURVEY AREA
The survey area is approximately 230 feet above mean sea level. Much of the survey area is bare (dirt
paths) with scattered nominative vegetation, but with patches of coastal sage scrub throughout.
METHODS
LSA Biologist Mark J. Billings walked slowly throughout the survey area listening and watching for
coastal California gnatcatchers. A taped recording was played during the first survey, but not
thereafter. Three protocol surveys were conducted between June 11 and 25, 2010. Surveys were
conducted according to protocol techniques.
Mr. Billings conducted the surveys pursuant to LSA's Federal Fish and Wildlife 10(a)(1)(A) Permit
TE-777965-8 (expires April 17, 2012) and a temporary authorization from the California Department
of Fish and Game (CDFG; May 12, 2003—March 31, 2007; renewal request submitted March 26,
2007, extending coverage indefinitely) in lieu of a Memorandum of Understanding between LSA and
the CDFG.

June 25 0700-0815 Mild, overcast-mostly overcast, light wind J.
RESULTS
Two pairs of coastal California gnatcatchers were detected on every visit (see attached Figure 2). One
pair was observed in an area along the proposed haul route, but mostly frequented the disturbed coastal
sage scrub to the northwest. The other pair frequented an area just northwest of a proposed work area.
Although obvious pairs, no young or evidence of nesting was noted. There is decent coastal sage scrub
near the project area, therefore young of the year may have already dispersed;
Please contact me or Mike Trotta at (760) 931-5471 if you have any questions about this letter report.
Sincerely,
LSA ASSOCIATES, INC.
