On November 16th, 17th and 18th, 2009, Dudek habitat restoration specialist Stuart Fraser conducted plant inspections for the Rancho Santa Fe
Road Bridge Offsite Mitigation Area. Plant inspections included inspecting delivered plants and verifying placement of container shrub species.
Dudek met with Green Horizon representative Antonio for all coordination. Comments and recommendations are included below.
,
Plant Inspections:
1. The November 16th inspection consisted of checking in shrub container plants and assisting the contractor in placement. Visits on the
17th and 18th included follow-up discussions regarding plant placement and progress updates. All plants delivered appeared to be healthy
and adequately rooted in their container but not root bound. All containers appeared free from weeds and non-beneficial insects. Dudek
made recommendations for placing particular wetland plants, based on site hydrology and tree placement. Dudek recommended
immediate planting of all shrub spebies. The following plants were inspected:
Anernopsis californica (1 gal.) - 1414
Scirpus califonica (1 gal.) - 1162
Iva hayesiana (1 gal.) -424
2. Dudek recommended protecting all container plants from herbivore browsing while in the storage area. A protective barrier will discourage
animals from browsing on plants concentrated in the staging area prior to planting is recommended.
3. Vandalism over the weekend was conducted on site. Several willow container plants were dug up and thrown into the creek. These plants
were replanted by Green Horizons, but appeared streesed into the following days. Dudek will monitor the survival of these plants and
recommends replacement if mortality occurs
