In accordance with your request this report has been prepared to present the results of field
observations and tests performed during the grading for the Kellas Residence Jn Carlsbad,

California Our services were performed between July 12 and July. 25, 2006 To assist in
1 determining the locations and elevations of our vi field density tests, we were proded with a Grading
Plan prepared by Logan-,E ngi nee ring dated January 24, 2006, which defines the general extent of

Site preparation began with the clearing and grubbing of the existing vegetation and organic matter
I ' at the proposed development area The material generated from the operations was exported from
the site.

7 0 The potentially, compressible topsoil and subsoil deposits were removed 8 to 11 feet 'from'the areas
I to receive fill and from beneati settlement-sensitive improvements Expansive topsoils were
exported from the site The bottoms of the removal areas typically exposed dense terrace deposits
The removals extendd laterally to the entire extent of the proposed structure Following the
I removals the exposed surface was scarified to a depth of 12 inches, moisture conditioned and
compacted until field density tests indicated a minimum of 90 percent relative compaction..Optimum
I moisture and relative compaction are based on the ASTM D 1557-00 laboratory test method
The excavated soils and import soils were placed as compacted fill Fill was placed in 6 to 8 inch
I lifts moisture conditioned to near optimum moisture content and compacted until field density tests
indicatedá minimum of 90 percent relative compaction. Compaction Was.achidved by means of a'
Case 145013 with an attached sheep's foot roller. This process continued until planned elevations
I
were reached
I i 4 DRIVEWAY
The driveway preparation essentially consisted of removing the existing topsoil and subsoils to a
depth of 2 feet The exposed surface was scarified, moisture conditioned and compacted Fill soils
to bring the driveway to grade have not yet been placed The location is noted on plate No 1
I 2 FIELD OBSERVATIONS AND TESTS
Field observations and density tests were performed by .a representative of SCS&T during the
earthwork operations at the locations shown on Plate No 1 The density tests were performed I according to ASTM D 2922-01 (nuclear gauge) procedures The results of the tests are shown on
Plate ,No. The accuracy of the in-situ density test locations and elevations is a function of the
accuracyof the .survey control provided by others than SCS&T representatives. Unless otherwise •"
noted, their locations and elevations were determined by pacing and hand level methods and should
be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used

I As used herein, the term "observation" implies only that we observed the progress of work we were
involved with, and performed field density tests which, in conjunction with our observations were the
base for our opinion as to whether the work was performed in substantial conformance with the
I geotechnical recommendations and the requirements of the applicable agencies
I
3 LABORATORY TESTS
Maximum dry density determinations were performed on representative samples of the soils used in
I
the compacted fills according to ASTM 0 1557 The results of these tests presented on Plate No
2 were used in conjunction with the field density tests to determine the degree of relative
compaction of the compacted fill -
The expansion potential of thp prevailing foundation soils was determined using LJBC Test Method
18-2 The results of this test, shown on Plate No 2 indicate non-detrimentally expansive soil
I conditions
I 3.1. REMAINING WORK
The following operations remain to be completed It is recommended that field observations and
relative compaction tests be, performed during.-these operations to verify that these operations are
I being performed in accordance with job requirements and local grading ordinances
I
. Final grading for the driveway,
Subgrade preparation for hardscape areas,
Preparing and placing the driveway subgrade course
I . Backfilling of retaining walls,
Backfilling of underground utility. trenches -
1 / 4 CONCLUSIONS
I
Based on our field observations and the in-place density test results, it is our opinion that the
building pad, slopes, and roadway preparaton and compaction were performed substantially in
accordance with the recommendations contained in the referenced geotechnial report(s),-the City
of Carlsbad and the California'Building Code
I
5 LIMITATIONS
This report covers only the services performed between July 12 and July 25, 2006 Our opinions are
based on our observations and the relative compaction test results and are limited by the scope of
1 the work that we agreed to perform Our work was performed in accordance with the currently

I accepted standard of practice and in such a manner, as to provide a reasonable measure of the
compliance of the grading operations with the project requirements No warranty, express or
implied, is made or intended with respect to the work that we have performed and neither the
I performance of this work nor the submittal of this report should be construed as relieving the
contractor of the responsibility to conform with the project requirements
IOur work was generally performed on an on-call" basis Therefore, the in-place dnsity tests
performed by our field representative can only be construed as representative of the areas tested as
I shown on the attached plates
