Western Foundation and Shoring, and as required by the City of Carlsbad plan reviewer, we have reviewed the temporary shoring plans for the proposed residential project at the subject address. The reviewed undated plans (Sheets SH-1 through SH-4) were prepared by Berger ABAM, and have been reviewed from a geotechnical engineering viewpoint to verify their adequate compliance with the recommendations presented in our "Report of Geotechnical Investigation" for the site, dated May 16, 2016. In addition, we have reviewed the soli design parameters used for the structural calculations of the temporary shoring wall, also prepared by Berger ABAM, dated January 24, 2017. It is our opinion that the soil parameters used for active pressure, passive pressure, and arching of caissons to calculate passive resistance are In compliance with the values we recommend for cantilever (unrestrained) walls and with values we would recommend for shoring design on this project. Regarding acceptable lateral deformation and surcharge load design values for temporary shoring, we defer to the structural designer to consider In the design the adjacent structures and improvements affecting the design. The typical deformation for a 10-foot-high shoring wall with the same soil type is 0.5-inch. In our opinion, the reviewed plans are in substantial compliance with the soil design parameters . presented in our geotechnical investigation report.
