Subject: Geotechnical Completion Letter of the Post Grading Operations, Lots 1 Through
25, Planning Area PA- 11, Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad, California
In accordance with the request and authorization of representatives of Barratt American,
Leighton and Associates (Leighton) has performed geotechnical observation and testing services
during retaining wall construction and backfill compaction operations on Lots 8 and 10 of
Planning Area PA-il of the Bressi Ranch project (Carlsbad Tract No. 00-06) located in Carlsbad,
California. As of the date of this letter, the retaining wall construction operations are essentially
complete. The results of our geotechnical observations and testing services will be presented in the
final post grading report for the project upon completion of the post grading operations. However,
this letter summarizes our geotechnical services during the retaining wall construction and backfill
compaction operations.
The geotechnical conditions encountered during the retaining wall construction operations were
generally as anticipated. Prior to the placement of the retaining wall footing, the footing excavation
was observed by a representative of Leighton and found to be in conformance with the project
geotechnical recommendations. After the retaining wall was built, we observed the retaining wall
backdrain and also found to be in conformance with the project geotechnical recommendations.
The placement and compaction of the retaining wall backfill was geotechnically observed and
documented. Field density testing indicated that the retaining wall backfill soils were placed and
compacted to at least a 90 percent relative compaction (based on American Standards of Testing
and Materials [ASTM] Test Method D1557) and near-optimum moisture content in accordance
with the recommendations of. Leighton and Associates and the requirements of the City of
Carlsbad.
The geotechnical aspects of the retaining wall construction and backfill operations on Lots 8 and
10 of Planning Area PA- il were performed in general accordance with the project geotechnical

reports, geotechnical recommendations made during grading, and the City of Carlsbad
