Reference Geotechnical Investigation Proposed Condominium Development Lot 41 Navarra I , Drive Carlsbad California" prepared by Western Soil and Foundation Engineering
Inc.; dated Auguét 5, 2004.
I Dear J.
Mr. Wright I
This report has been prepared to summarize the results of the in-place density tests and
I observations performed on the building pad at the subject site by Southern California Soil and
Testing, Inc (SCS&T) Testing and observation were performed between March 16 and 28 2006
11 SITE PREPARATION
Site preparation began with demolition, cleanng -and grubbing of deleterious material fron the
I development area.,Most of the material generated from these operations was exported from the
-. • ,,, site. ', • . •, 'S , •
-- .. ' . •-• .•
i.2. BASEMENT EXCAVATION I
The basement excavation was performed for the partial underground parking structure Shoring
was placed where temporary-slop es could not be constructed The shoring consisted of typical
beams and lagging Shoring operations were not observed by SCS&T during placement
1 1 3 PAD GRADING
As outlined in the referenced report, the entire building pad area and was over-excavated to a
minimum depth of 5 feet below the proposed bottom of footing elevation and a minimum of 5 feet
outside the proposed building envelope The over-excavation was performed to create a uniform

condition beneath the proposed structure and lessen the potential for differential settlement
I However, back-cut requirements for the excavation in non-shored areas along the southern property
line necessitated removals extending only 3 foot outside the proposed building envelope. The
bottom of the removal area exposed terrace deposits
Subsequent to the removals the excavation bottoms were scarified to a depth of 12 inches
I moisture conditioned and compacted until field density tests indicated a minimum of 90 percent of
maximum dry density, determined in accordance with ASTM 0 1557 laboratory test method The
I soils generated from the removal operations and on-site cuts were placed in the removed areas as
uniformly compacted fill material Typically, fill soils were placed in thin moisture conditioned lifts
and compacted to a minimum of 90 percent relative compaction Compaction vas achieved by
I means of a Caterpillar 980 rubber tire loader This process continued until planned elevations were
reached.
1.4. FIELD OBSERVATION AND TESTING
A representative of SCS&T performed field observations and density tests during the grading
I operations at the locations shown on Plate No 1 The density tests were performed according to
ASTM 02922-01 (nuclear gauge) procedures The results of these tests are shown on Plate No 2
I The accuracy of the In-situ density test locations and elevations'is a function' of theacôuracy of,the

S
survey control provided by other than SCS&T representatives. Unless" otherwise noted, their
locations and elevations were determined by pacing and hand level methods and should be
I considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used
I As used herein the term "observation" implies only that we observed the progress of work we were
involved with, and performed field density tests which in conjunction with our observations, were the
basis for our opinion as to whether the work was performed in substantial conformance With the
I geotechnical recommendations, thidthe requirements of the applicable agencies.

1.5. LABORATORY TESTS
'S., . •
- / • S
Maximum dry density determinations were performed on representative samples of the soils used in
the compacted fills according to ASTM D 1557, Procedure A The results of these tests presented
on Plate No 2 were used in conjunction with the field density tests to determine the degree of
relative compaction of the compacted fill
The expansive potential of the fill soils within the upper three feet of finish grade was determined
'using UBC Test Method 18-2. The results of the tests are shown on Plate No. 2. The results of
these tests indicate non-detrimentally expansive soil conditions

'11.6. REMAINING WORK
I The following operations remain to be completed It is recommended that field observations and
relative compaction tests be performed during these operations to verify that these operations are I being performed in accordance with job requirements 'and local gréding ordinances
Removal and recompaction of driveway entrance tie-in to existing street I ' • Final grading of the driveway entrance and concrete flatwork
Backfihling the underground utility, trenches
1 11J.' CONCLUSIONS
Based on our field observations and the in-place density test results,t is the opinionof SCS&T that • - -
the grading work was performed substantially in accordance with the recommendations contained in
the referenced geotechnical reports the City of Carlsbad Grading Ordinance, the
I Grading/Improvement Plan Drawing Number 431-2A and the California Building Code Minimum
recommendations for the design of the foundations as presented in the referenced report, remain
i applicable
.1.8. LIMITATIONS
1 This report covers only the services performed between March Wand 28 2006 Our opinions
presented herein are based on our observations and the relative compaction test results and are
I limited by the scope of the services that we agreed to perform Our services were performed in
r accordance with the currently accepted standard of practice and in such a manner as to provide a
reasonable measure of the compliance of the gçading operations with the job requirements No
I -
warranty, express, or implied, is given or intended with respect to the services' which we have
- - performed, and neither the performance of those services, nor the submittal of this report should be
construed as relieving the contractor of the responsibility to conform with the job requirements
Our services were generally performed on an "on-call" basis Therefore the in-place density tests
performed by our field representative can only be construed as representative of the areas tested,
which are, shown on the attached plates
