EL CAMINO REAL ROAD WIDENING
CASSIA HEIGHTS APARTMENTS
CASSIA STREET AND EL CAMINO REAL
CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA
Reference; "Pavement Recommendations, El Camino Real Road Widening, Cassia Heights
Apartments, Cassia Heights, Carlsbad, California", prepared by Southern California
Soil & Testing, Inc., dated August 17, 2006, Report Np. 6.
DearMs. Barlow:
In accordance with a request from Allgire Construction, Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc.
has prepared this letter to address soft/wet trench backfill soils that have been encountered at
subgrade level along the alignment of the planned El Camino Real road widening. The soft/wet soils
occur in a generally 2- to 3-foot wide area oriented parallel to El Camino Real. The affected area has
been marked out with orange paint. The soft/wet soils generally extendto depths of about 18 to 30
inches belowsubgrade level, extending around and below existing telephone conduits. The depth of
the conduits appears to range from about subrade level to about 18 inches below subgrade level.
Due to the presence of the conduits, it is not practical to remove a substantial portion of the soft/wet
soils. In order to reduce the risk of future pavement distress in the affected area, it is recommended
that the soft/wet soils overlying the conduit be removed to the extent practical without damaging the
conduits, generally about 6 to 12 inches below subgrade level. The, removed soils should be
replaced with Class II base material. Oncëthis is completed, reinforcing géotextile should be placed
at subgrade level, and should extend 6 inches up the vertical cut at the western edge of the road
widening area. All other recommendations presented in the referenced letter remain applicable.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please call me at 619-280-4321.
Sincerely,
SOUTHERN CALIFQRNIA Lo ESTING, INC.
