Report No. 1701-13-C-5.
Advanced Geotechnical Solutions, Inc. (AGS) observed the soil and geologic conditions at the subject
project during site grading and improvement construction, and found them to be substantially in
conformance with those assumed in the approved geotechnical rep01t (Reference 1) and described in the
project grading repo1t (Reference 2). Unsuitable soils in the subject building pad areas were removed and
replaced with compacted fill soils to approximate design finish grades. Soil backfill of utility lines was
compacted to at least 90 percent of maximum dry density as determined by ASTM: D-1557. Footing
excavations for the proposed single-family residences were observed to extend to a suitable bearing strata
and meet minimum embedment requirements. The soil has been tested for expansive characteristics and
determined to possess "very low to medium" potential for expansion. The upper soils were tested for
soluble sulfate concentrations and found to have "negligible" sulfate concentrations. Based on AGS's
testing and observations and review of the referenced repo1ts, the soil engineering and engineering
geologic aspects of the grading are in compliance with the approved geotechnical report and the grading
and improvement plans. The subject building pads are considered suitable for suppo1t of the proposed

Subject: Supplemental Compaction Report, Masonry Retaining Walls, Golden Surf
Residential Development, 1000 Camino De Las Ondas, City of Carlsbad, San Diego
County, California
References: See Appendix
In accordance with your request, Advanced Geotechnical Solutions, Inc. (AGS) has prepared this repoti
summarizing our observation and test results collected during the construction of the Masonry Retaining
walls at the Golden Surf Residential Development, 1000 Camino De Las Ondas in the City of Carlsbad,
California. The specific locations of these walls are shown on Plates I through 3 (utilizing the most
current Retaining Wall Addition Exhibit as a base).
The subject walls were constructed as part of the ongoing development of the Golden Surf project. The
subject walls were constructed under the periodic observation and testing of AGS. Specifically, AGS
personnel conducted the following services during the construction of the subject wall:
• Observed footing excavations to verify that the footings were founded in firm competent
materials;
• Conducted periodic observations to verify Masonry retaining walls were constructed in general
conformance to the plans and recommendations presented in the referenced repo1ts and the San
Diego Regional Standard Drawings.
• Observed wall backdrains.
• Provided periodic compaction testing of the backfill to verify the minimum compaction criteria
(minimum of 90% of the laboratory maximum density per ASTM D-1557) was meet;
During the placement of the masonry wall backfill, representatives of AGS observed and conducted
periodic compaction testing. In general, the majority of the wall backfill consisted of crushed rock
(314inch) capped with approximately 12 to 18 inches of locally derived soils. During the backfill
operations the wall backfill was moisture conditioned to or slightly above optimum moisture content,
placed in thin, loose lifts (approximately 12 inches), and compacted to a minimum of 90 percent of the
laboratory maximum dry density in accordance with ASTM Test Method D-1557. Compaction was
achieved utilizing a vibratory and hand operated tampers.
