Domestic Water Service System Sizing
Domestic Meter Sizing
August 17, 2018
Dexter Wilson Eng., Inc.
A single master domestic meter is proposed for each Drive Aisle within the Poinsettia 61
Phase 1 development. All but one Drive Aisle have six (6) dwelling units which will be
served by the single master domestic water meter. One Drive Aisle has only five (5)
dwelling units.
The approach to sizing the domestic water meter is as follows:
1. Determine the Water Fixture Unit count for each dwelling unit floor plan. Attached
to this calculation package are the floor plans for all four (4) different dwelling unit
products proposed for Poinsettia 61 Phase 1, including their variations.
Spreadsheets, attached, summarize the Water Fixture Unit count as follows:
a. Plan 1 -30 WFUs
b. Plan 2 -33 WFUs
c. Plan 3 -29 WFUs
d. Plan 4 -51 WFUs
2. Use the Precise Grading Plan to determine the number of each dwelling unit plan
along each Drive Aisle. Attached are reduced size plan sheets from the Precise
Grading Plan showing the dwelling unit layout for each Drive Aisle.
3. Sum the Water Fixture Unit count for all the dwelling units on a Drive Aisle.
4 . Using the 2016 California Plumbing Code, Chart A 103.1 (2), attached, convert total
Water Fixture Unit counts to Demand in gallons per minute (gpm).
5. To this Demand, add the irrigation demand allowance of 4 gpm per dwelling unit.
The irrigation demand allowance was estimated by the landscape architect for the
Poinsettia 61 project. See the attached email which provides the back-up data for
Page 2 of 7

the 4 gpm per dwelling unit estimate.
August 17, 2018
Dexter Wilson Eng., Inc.
6. Compare the total Water Demand (Water Fixture Unit demand plus irrigation
demand) to the allowable domestic meter capacities as outlined in the attached
email from Mario Remillard, Carlsbad Municipal Water District, to determine the
proper domestic meter size.
7. For all Drive Aisles within the Poinsettia 61 Phase 1 development, the domestic
master meter size is 1-1/2-inch.
8. Each 1-1/2-inch domestic water meter shall be followed by a 1-1/2-inch reduced
pressure principle backflow preventer assembly.
9. After the backflow assembly, the piping becomes the private domestic distribution
piping to be constructed in the Drive Aisle. The sizing of this private domestic
distribution piping is presented in the following section of these calculations.

Private Domestic Distribution Pipe Sizing
August17,2018
Dexter Wilson Eng., Inc.
The private domestic distribution pipe sizing will follow the methodology outlined in the
2016 California Plumbing Code, Appendix A-Recommended Rules for Sizing the Water
Supply System, Sections A 102.0 through A 105.0.
The private domestic distribution pipe sizing will be calculated for the Drive Aisle with the
greatest Water Demand. This is Drive Aisle 'M' on Sheet 10 of 10 of the Precise Grading
Plan for Poinsettia 61 Phase 1 (attached to these calculations).
This calculation of the required size for the private domestic distribution pipe is
conservative in that the Water Demand is assumed to be flowing to the furthest dwelling
unit. We know this is not the case as the Water Demand will decrease in the private
domestic distribution piping as service laterals extend to each dwelling unit.

Hi Faye,
It looks like most yards have about 1000 sq.ft. of backyard landscaping. We figured 1/3rd in turf and the rest
in moderate water use plantings, and we came up with a calculated peak minimum required flow of less than
1 gpm (0.7gpm) over an 8 hour period, irrigated 3 days a week. That's said, no one is going to install 1 gpm
valve systems, so we have to look at the flow necessary to irrigate ~300 sf of turf, and ~100 sf of drip irrigated
plantings on valve systems. These should equal approximately 4 gpm for the turf and 3 gpm for the
plantings. Irrigation of these would occur sequentially, so peak flow can be considered 4 gpm.
Thanks,
Scott
