Subject: Results of Pre-Construction Nesting Bird Survey at Cannon Road and Grand Pacific
Avenue, City of Carlsbad, California
Mr. Guerrero:
This letter summarizes the results of the nesting bird survey that Rocks Biological Consulting
(RBC) conducted at the Cannon Road and Grand Pacific Drive (Project) on March 16, 2016, in
Carlsbad, California.
Two surveyors conducted the survey by walking through suitable nesting habitat spaced
approximately 10 feet apart over the Project site and a 100-foot buffer area while looking for bird
nests and/or nesting behavior such as birds carrying nest materials or courtship displays. Field
binoculars (1 0x42) were used to aid in the observation and identification of avian species. An
additional 300-foot buffer was surveyed for nesting raptors using binoculars. The survey was
conducted from 0700 to 0815 under conditions favorable for observing nesting bird activity.
Dominant vegetation communities within the site are ornamental vegetation and disturbed land
(Attachment A: Photos 1 and 2).
Bird activity on the site was low and no active or inactive nests were observed during the survey.
A list of the eight bird species observed during the survey is included as Attachment B. To ensure
no impacts to nesting birds, clearing and grubbing activities should commence within ten days of
the completion of this survey or the site will need to be resurveyed for nesting birds.
