Subject: Final Clearance Report on Soil Conditions
Gentlemen:
This report is to cover the results of our tests and observa-
- tions concerning the site clearing and compaction of filled ground
placed on the above referenced project as shown on the enclosed
-.. Site Plan.
-. The filled ground for Carlsbad Tract 72-2, Unit 3 utas placed
between the dates of April 26, 1973 and May 23, 1973.
- The preparation of the natural ground and placing of compacted
filled ground was done in accordance with the approved recommendations
- and specifications contained in our Preliminary Soil Investigation
- Report for this project dated 26 January 1972. Please note this
project was previously called ltCampobello Planned Communitytf and
was subsequently entitled Carlsbad Tract 72-2, Altamira.
The laboratory compaction test procedures and test results for
_I the soils encountered during grading are presented on page 3. Also
--- shown on page 3 are the field density test methods. The field density
test results are listed on pages 4 thru 15.
- The approximate area of fill tested and location of the field
-
density tests are shown on the enclosed Site Plan. This Site Plan
- has been redrawn from the approved Grading Plan by Rick Engineers,
Carlsbad. Also shown is the location of a drain system to dry up
the groundwater as noted in the previously mentioned Preliminary Soil
Investigation.
-- Field density tests indicate the filled ground has been compacted
- to at least 90% of the maximum dry density.
Footings placed less than 5 feet inside the top of the slopes
- should be deepened one foot below a 13 horizontal to 1 vertical line
projected outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontally in-
- side the top of the slopes.
- Final subbase field density tests should be taken when Lewder
Lane has been completed.
The cut portions of all parking areas should be reworked and
recompacted to at least 90% before importing base material.
Vertical retaining wall backfills should be tested to 90%
maximum dry density. We should be notified prior to placing any
backfill in this arear”“.

- 1 - Laboratory Compaction Tests
Nine laboratory compaction tests were performed on the fill
- material to determine the maximum dry density and optimum moisture
content as specified by ASTM D 1557-64T (method’A). The test uses
- the minus #4 sieve soil in a 4 inch diameter 4 inch high cylinderical
- mold. The sample is formed with a 10 pound hammer falling 18 inches
for 25 blows on each of 5 layers.

Field density tests were taken at selected locations to
determine the moisture and density conditions of the fill and
backfills. The tests were performed according to ASTM 01556-64,
the Sand Cone method. The ratio of field dry density to the
laboratory maximum dry density is defined as the relative
compaction.
