Gentlemen:
This report records our observations and the results of tests performed in connection with the compaction of backfill placed in utility trenches, and the subgrade and aggregate base placed in the private streets and parking areas of
the subject property. This property is more particularly referred to as
Assessors Parcel No. 223-190-09, -10, -11, -12, -13, -14, -15, -16, and -17,
in the City of Carlsbad, County of San Diego, State of California.
We refer to our First Interim Report of Compacted Filled Ground dated March 12, 1986, Second Interim Report of Compacted Filled Ground dated October 9, 1986, Third Interim Report of Compacted Filled Ground dated November 3, 1986, Fourth Interim Report of Compacted Filled Ground dated December 4, 1986, Fifth Interim Report of Field Density Tests, dated August 18, 1987, and to two
reports by Benton Engineering, Inc: Final Report of Compacted Filled Ground,
dated November 27, 1974 and Site Inspection and Recommendations for
Construction, dated July 22, 1981.
This report addresses backfill, subgrade and aggregate base placement and compaction accomplished during the period from August 17, 1987 through November 17, 1987.
The results of the field density tests and the elevations at which they were taken are presented on pages T-43 through T-48 under "Field Density Test Results." The results of the laboratory tests of the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content of the backfill material, subgrade and aggregate
base are presented on pages L-l and L-2 under "Laboratory Test Results." The approximate locations of the field density tests are presented on Drawing Nos.
8, 9, 10, and 11 entitled "Approximate Location of Compacted Filled Ground."
The drawings were sketched from a reduced copy of the undated plans entitled
"Site and Utilities Plan for Sea Point Village, La Costa" prepared by Rick Engineering Company, and our field observations. Field dimensions are
established by a combination of pacing and taping.

We conclude that the trench backfill soils placed under our inspection have
been compacted to at least 90 percent of their maximum dry density. Also, the
upper six inches of subgrade and the aggregate base placed under our inspection have been compacted to at least 95 percent of their maximum dry
density. Please be aware that proper site drainage and continuous maintenance
of drainage facilities is directly related to the stability of foundations as well as the stability of cut and fill slopes. We therefore recommend that
surface run-off be directed away from slopes and foundations, toward the
street or other drainage facilities without intermediate ponding. Surface
waters should not be permitted to flow over the top of any exposed slopes.
We further recommend that we be authorized to review the design and construction of foundations and inspect any further grading or trench backfill in order to assure that our recommendations have been understood. Seemingly minor variations between our recommendations and the construction can result
in essentially nullifying their advantageous effects. This would result in a
waste of engineering, time, money, and materials. If foundations or further
earthwork are not inspected by us, we offer no assurance of adequate foundation performance or that any of our conclusions related to soil stability may be relied upon.
Pages T-43 through T-48, L-l, L-2, and Drawing Nos. 8, 9, IO, and 11 are parts of this report.
