This report presents soil engineering data and test results pertaining to the placement of
compacted earth fill on the subject property. Preliminary foundation criteria are also included
in this report for Lots 1, 44 and 135.
All fills, cuts or processing of original ground under the purview of this report have been
completed under our inspection or accepted by this finn, and are in compliance with
f .H.A. criteria and the Grading Code of the City of Carlsbad, California. All work
under c~r purview was accomplished in accordance with the "Earthwork Specifications"
contained in the above-referenced investigation report.
Completed work has been reviewed and is considered suitable for the intended use. All
slopes are considered grossly and surficially stable and will remain so under nonnal conditions.

Compaction test results are presented in Table I, and approximate locations of tests are
shown on the enclosed grading pion (7 sheets). Also shown on the plan are locations of
tests taken in adjacent areas. These tesf· results have been submitted in previous grading
reports.

* Swell test's were re(r., ,,e-inch high ring to 90 percent relative compaction
utilizing material at op!· ,ure for samples to be surchc:rged at 650psf. Samples were
inundated for 24-hours: ,n amount of swell was recorded. ASCE denotes in accordance
with ASCE Expansion Index Test. ND denotes not determined.
1. Prior to the placement of the compacted fill, the exposed natural surface wos
scarified, watered as necesscliy and compacted in-place, suitable to receive fill.
Where necessary, alluvial materials in canyon swale bottorns were removed to eHlier
in-place bedrock, or competent naturo l soi Is.
2. Fill consisting of the above soil types was then placed in thin lifts, \4ratered as
necessary and compacted in-place too minimum of 90 percent of the laboratory
standard utilizing tractor-drawn sheepsfoot type rollers and heavy earth moving
equipment. Each fill was treated in a like manner.

3. Fili placed on slope gradients steeper than 5-horizontal to l-vertical was keyed
and benched into bedrock. The upper soils were stripped and/or benched out on the
shallower slopes in such a manner that all compacted fill is in contact Vlifh intact
bedrock or competent soi Is.
4. All removals and excavating for canyon cleanouts, and proc~ssing in preparing fill
areas were inspected and approved by this firm's representative prior to placement
of any fill.
5. Compodion tests were taken for each om..~ to two feet of fill placed. The maximum
vertical l>Pth of f';f' !:,-ed is on the order of 40 feet on Lot 1, 16feet on Lot 44
and 8 feet on Lot i -. ·
Compacted fl I I was placed to within one {l) to six (6) feet of the finished grade as
shown on sheet 10,on Lot l. The intention is to use miscellaneous clean-up dirt
from the residential pads and streets, to bring this pad to grade. The materials
should be compacted, tested and inspected by a soil engineering firm.
6. . FHI placed offsite (south) of Lots 310-313 is i:,:,nsidered a structural fill. Preparation
,.>for filling followed procedures as outlined in No. 4 above. Prior to building any
structures in this area however, plans should be reviewed and approved by o qualified
soil engineering firm.
7. Excess soil was placed offsite southerly (generally) of Lots 269, 270, and 315, and the
end of Manzanita and Columbine. This fill is not considered as a structural fill, nor
is it shown on the enclosed plans. Cleanout prior to filiing, end compaction testing
and inspection was not accomplished for th is fi II.

8. Compacted fill sloi:;es were back-rolled as they were brought to grade at approximate
four-foot intervals. At the completion cf fill placement, the slope was uniformly

compacted by track-rolling and finished by cutting and trimming bock to the compacted
core. Slope tests were made after completion of trimming. All slope densification
has been completed and the slopes ore considered stable under normal conditions.
9. Materials encountered in cut and utilized for compacted fill ranged from non-to

moderately--expansive in nature. An evaluation of expansiveness of the subject lots
should be accomplished at such time that specific plans are available.
The following crite,, . :,rcfiminary foundation design for the subject
lots.
a) The recommended bearing value for both th~ interior and exterior footings is
1500 lbs./sq.ft. having a minimum embedment of 12-inches and having
a minimum width of l ~· inches.
b) A lateral bearing value of 300 lbs/sq.ft. per foot of depth of a maximum
of 1500 lbs./sq.ft. may be utilized. A lateral sliding coefficient of 0.4~
may be used in design.
The above values may be increased one-third for short duration loads such
as seismic and wind loads.
11. Specific recommendations for foundation will depend upon the type of structures
proposed, foundation loads, and the intended use(s) of the facilities. Development
plans for future foci lities should be submitted to a soi I engineering finn for review
and comment.
