SUMMARY OF GENERAL EARTHWORK AND TESTING
e Woodward·Clyde Consultants
Street preparation, compaction, and testing were done
between July 20, 1981 and August 4, 1981. In our opinion,
based on our observation and testing, the work performed
during that period was in general conformance with the
recommendations presented in our letter entitled "Lime
Treated Subgrade Study and Pavement Recommendations Lake
Calavera Hills Interior Streets and Tamarack Avenue,
Carlsbad, California," dated August 3, 1981.
Previous grading of the subject site was completed between
January 7 and June 3, 1981. That grading included placing
and compacting fill in the subject streets to bring them to
approximate subgrade elevations. That work is summarized in
our field report of engineering observation and testing of
compacted fill dated April 28, 1981, and our compaction test
results report dated June 19, 1981.
During the street preparation period, the subgrade of
Tamarack Avenue from E1 Camino Real to Station 58+00, Dundee
Court, Kirkwall Avenue, Glasgo1 Drive from Kirkwal1 Avenue
to Edinburgh Drive,' and Edinburgh Drive from Tamarack Avenue
to Glasgow Drive, were scarified to an approximate depth of
11 inches and treated with quicklime. The percentage of
lime ranged from 3.4 to 8.6 with an average on the order of
4-1/2 percent (by dry weight). The material was watered,
mixed, compacted, and shaped to approximate sub-base eleva-
tions. Class 2 aggregate base generally conforming to 1-
1/2 inch maximum size in accordance with Section 26 of State
of California Standard Specifications was then placed,
compacted, and shaped to approximate base elevations.
During the street preparation operation, compaction proce-
dures were observed and field density tests were made to
help evaluage the relative compaction of the lime 'treated
sub-base and base material. Field observations and results
of field density tests indicate that the sub-base and base,
generally have been compacted to 90 percent and 95 percent,
respectively.
Laboratory tests were performed on representative samples of
the lime treated sub-base material to evaluate percentage of
lime, maximum dry density, and R-va1ue. Maximum dry density,

R-va1ue, sieve analysis, and sand equivalent tests were
performed on the base material to verify conformance to
specifications. The results of these laboratory tests are
attached.

The conclusions and opinions drawn from the test results and
site inspection apply only to our work with respect to
street preparation, and represent conditions at the date of
our final inspection; they are based on the assumption
that conditions do not vary appreciable from the tests or
sample locations. We will accept no responsibi1ty for any
subsequent changes made to this site by others.
