For our evaluation, we obtained a sample of subgrade material and a R-value on this soil was performed. We understand that the City of Carlsbad Engineering Department provided the traffic index for the street. - The results of the R-value test, as performed by American Engineering Laboratories, Inc., p () indicate that the soils have an R-value of 76. The TI provided us by Mr. Jack Noltan, was • 8.0. As indicated, the street will be widened by 4 feet; the pavement recommendation is / for this 4-foot pavement section at the extreme eastern portion of the roadway adjacent to / Poinsettia Village. In our calculations we assumed that Class II aggregate base with a oil ' minimum R-value of 78 would be used as the base material. 0 Based on the criteria stated above, we recommend that the pavement section consist of 4 - / 1/2 inches of asphaltic concrete placed over 6 inches of Class II aggregate base. We 3 V recommend that the upper 6 inches of subgrade be compacted to 95 percent relative * compaction as compared to ASTM D1557-78. We further recommend that mix designs be made for asphaltic concrete by an engineering company specializing in this type of work and that AC paving operations be inspected by / a qualified testing laboratory. It is important that adequate surface drainage be provided V to reduce ponding and infiltration of water into the subgrade materials. We recommend that Class II aggregate base conform to the latest edition of the State of California Standard Specifications, Section 26-1.02B. Asphaltic concrete should conform to the Standard Specifications, Section 29-2.01, for the Asphalt, and Section 39-202(B), for the Consulting Engineers, Geologists 4 _____ 00 Poinsettia Associates WowartClYde Consultants Project No. 875 1264W-EWO2 December 9, 1987 Page 2 aggregate.
