SUBJECT: Stability of Off-Site Stockpi 11 ,,
Carlsbad, California.
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request, we have examined the off-site stockpile
associated with the grading of Village Jin the Calaveras Hills region in
Carlsbad, California. It is our understanding-that this fill, which is
located, on Village E, is to be used by the adjacent property owner. The
:1 purpOse of.this reconnaissance was to present.our opinion regarding the
stability of this stockpile and, hence, if any risk is assumed by the
adjacent residential units.
.
• The stockpiled soils havebeen constructed into a mound with side slopes
ranging from approximately 3.5:1 (horizontal to vertical) to 4:1. Maximum
slope height is on the order of 50 feet. The soils contained in this stock-
pile consist of silty, slightly clayey, sands which possess relatively good
strength parameters. Based on random in-place density-tests taken during
its construction, itis believed that the majority of thi.s fill is compacted
to at least 85% of maximum dry density. .

Based on this review and our knowledge of the physical characteristics of
this soil, it is our opinion that this stockpile is stable with relation to
deep-seated rotational failures. The most likely hazard is the erosion of
the lobser surface soils. It is our opinion that this potential hazard has
also been mitigated by the placement of straw bails and sandbags at the toe
of -the slopes.
