Gentlemen:
This report presents engineering data, test results and calcula-
tions relative to the pavement design for a portion of the sub-
ject project.
This report specifically pertains to the limits of interior streets
as described below:

This report also covers any parking or access areas within these
limits.
Three (3) subgrade samples were obtained from the private street
areas stated above. Classification tests indicated that all the
soils were very similar so one (1) "R"-Value test was conducted
for analysis.
Test results indicated a: "R"-Value of 44 for the interior streets.
Sand equivalent tests and hydrometer analysis indicated a S.E.
of 21 (81% Sand, 11% Silt, 8% Clay) for Sea Gate Road; a S.E.
of 19 (78% Sand, 10% Silt, 12% Clay) for Mariner Street; and a
S.E. of 20 (82% Sand, 8% Silt, 10% Clay) for Shore Crest Road.
These results are presented on Plate A and Table I.
A Traffic. Index of 6.0 has been utilized for Sea Gate Road.
A Traffic mdix of 5.0 has been utilized for Mariner Street,
Shore Crest Road, access and parking areas, as per the City of
Carlsbad, Table A for local streets.
The following design claculations are presented:
Gravel. Equivalent - 0.0384 (Traffic Index) 100-"R"
Use "R" = 44
For Sea Gate Road - T.I. = 6.0
G.E. = 0.0384 (6.0) (100-44) = . :1:2:.:9:0-inches
Try 4-inches A.C.over 6-inches Aggregate Base (Minimum section per
Table A)

::_ 6.6-inches G.E.
15.9-inches G.E. greater than 12.90-inches; okay

For Mariner Street, Shore Crest Road,
Access and Parking Lanes - T.I. = 5.0
G.E. = 0.0384 (5.,0)(100-44) = 10.75-inches
Try 3-inches A.C. over 6-inches Aggregate Base (Minimum section
per Table A)
c
3-inches A C 7.5-inches G.E.
6-inches. A C 6.6-inches G.E.
14.1-inches reater than 10.75-inches; okay
In summary, the recommended sections are:
Sea. Gate Road - 4-inches A.C.over 6-inches A.B.
Mariner Street, Shore Crest Road,
Access and Parking Lanes - 3-inches A.C.over 6-inches A.B.
The on-site soils are not expansive in nature and special treat-
ment beneath the curb, gutter and sidewalks is not necessary.
As a part of preparation for base and asphaltic concrete, the
subgrate shall be suitably moisture conditioned, processed and
mixed as necessary to attain near optimum moisture and compacted
in-place to a minimum of 95 percent of the Laboratory Standard
ASTM:D 1557-78. All utility trench backfill should likewise be
compacted.
Aggregate base material should be placed on the compacted sub-
grade and compacted in-place to a minimum of 95 percent of the
Laboratory Standard Test Method California 216E.,
Preparation for compaction operations and base and pavement
construction-operations should be accomplished in accordance
with current requirements of the City of Carlsbad and under the
