Three (3) subgrade samples were obtained from the private street
areas stated above. Classification tests indicated that all the
soils were very similar so one (1) "R"-Value test was conducted
for analysis.
Test results indicated a "R" -Value of 44 for the interior streets.
Sand equivalent tests and hydrometer analysis indicated a S.E.
of 21 (81% Sand,11% Si1t,8% Clay) for Sea Gate Road, a S.E.. of
19 (78% Sand, 10%. Silt, 12% Clay) for Mariner Street; and a S.E.
of 20 (82% Sand, 8% Silt; 10% Clay) for Shore 'Crest Road. Test
results are presented on Plate A and,-Table I.
A Traffic Index of 5.0 has been utilized for thé'interior.streets,
access and parking areas, as per the City of Carlsbad Table A
for local streets. 'Parking and access lanes are designed using
a Traffic Index of 4.0 .
The following design calculations are presented;
Gravel Equivalent =0.0384 (Trffic Index') 10'0-"R"
Use "R" = '44'
For Interior :Str'e'.s. -• 'T .1. = 5'.,0
G.E. = 0.0384(5.0)a00-4= 10.75-inches'
Try 3-inches A.C. over 6-inches Aggregate Base (Minimum Section
per Table A)
3-inches A.C. = 7. 5-inches 'G.E...
6-inches A.B. = ' 6.6-inches. GE. .
14 .1-inches G.E. greater than 10.7 5-inches; okay

For Parking and Access Lanes - T.I. = 4.0
G.E. = 0.0384 (4.0) (100-44) = 8.60-inches
Try 3-inches A.C. over 4-inches Aggregate Base (Minimum Section
per Table A)
3-inches A.C. = 7.5-inches G.E.
4-inches A.B. = 4:.4_1nches G.E.
11.9-inches 'greater than 8.60-inches; okay
In summary, the recommended interior street,' access and parking
sections are: '
fnterior Streets - 3-inches A.C. over 6-inches A.B.
Access and Parking - •3-inches A.C. over 4-inches A.B.
The on-site soils are not expansive in nature and special treat 014 -
inent beneath the curb', gutter and sidewalks is not necessary.;' 9-
As 'a. part of preparation 'for base and asphaltic, concrete, the sub-
grade shall be suitably moisture conditioned, processed and mixed
as necessary to attain near optimum moisture and compacted in-place
to a minimum of 95 percent of the Laboratory Standard ASTM:D 1557-
78. All utility trench backfill should likewise be compacted.
Aggregate base material should be placed 'on the compacted sub--
grade and compacted in-place to a minimum of 95 percent of the
Laboratory Standard Test Method California 216E.
