Attention: Mr. Bruce Crable,

Subject: . Interim Pavement Design Report No.2, _

References: 1) Addendum to Interim Pavement De-
sign, Report, Sea Gate Village, Carls-

Gentlemen:
This report presents engineering data,' test results and calculations
relative to the pavement design for a portion of the subject pro-
ject.
This report specifically pertains to' the limits of streets as
described below:' '
''Li1ri'ts <'f' :Paven'e.n:t Design
'Street ' , 'S't'at;i:On
P.aseo del Norte 26+00 to 36+20
Three (3) subgrade samples were.obtained, from Paseo del Norte.
Classification tests' indicated that all the soils were very similar
so one (1) "R"-Value test was conducted -for analysis.

July 2, 1986
Test results indicated a "R"-Valué of 22 and a hydrometer analysis
shows there is 71 percent sand, 15 percent silt and '14 percent
clay, for a portion of Paseo del Nôrte. All results are present-
ed in Table I andon Plate -A.
A 'Traffic Index of 8.0 has been utilized for Paseo del' Norte
as per discussions with City of Carlsbad personnel and Table 'A
for secondary arterial streets.
The following design calculation is presented:
G.E. = (0.0384) (T.I.) (100-11 R")
(0.0384) (8.0) (78) = 24.0-inches G.E.
Try '4-inches of A.C.= 8.0-inches G.E.
15-inches of A.B. 16.5-inches G.E.
24.5-inches G.E.
Since 24.5 is greater -than 24.0, Section' is okay.
In summary the' recommended section .f or a portion of Paseo del
Norte is:
4-inches asphaltic concrete., over 15-inches aggregate base
The on-site soils are not expansive in nature' and special treat-
ment beneath the curb, gutter and sidewalks is not necessary.
fAs a part of preparation for base and asphaltic concrete, the .sub-
grade shall be suitably moisture conditioned, processed and mixed
as necessary,to attain near optimum moisture and compacted in-
place to a minimum of 95 percent of the Laboratory Standard ASTM:
D 1557-78. All utility trench backfill should likewise be compacted.

Aggregate base material should be placed on the compacted sub-
grade and compacted in-place to a minimum of 95 percent of the
Laboratory Standard Test Method California 216E.
Preparation for cornpaction'operations and base and pavement
construction operations should be accomplished in accordance
with current requirements of the City -of Carlsbad and under
the observation, inspection and testing of a representative of
the-site-soil engineering firm.'..
Respectfully submitted,
