CTE Job No. 10-13435G, dated December 30, 2016
Mr. Dempsey:
As requested. Construction Testing & Engineermg, Inc. (CTE) provides the response herein to
plan comments fipm the City of Carlsbad. CTE understands that the City is concerned that the
setback/distance-to-dayUght for the lower retaining waU depicted in Section C of the referenced
plan sheet is not in conformance with the recommended setback in the referenced geotechnical
report (The report recommended a minimmn setback of 15 feet from the face of nearest slope,
while the plan section shows a setback of approximately nine feet from face of slope.)
Based on review of CTE boring logs and site observations, CTE anticipates that at the planned
footing embedment depth shown on the plans, the lower retaining waU wUl be embedded into
competent native materials, and as such, a minimmn distance to daylight of seven feet is
considered appropriate. However, and as recommended in the referenced report, CTE should
observe the bottom of this and aU excavations to determine if adequate bearing materials are
exposed, and CTE reserves the right to recommend deepening of footing excavation in the field
based on om: observations.
