These controls were conducted to evaluate the potential effects due to conductivity alone. EPA/821/R-02/013, 2002 Freshwater Chronic The Lab Control must meet or exceed a mean of 80% survival; 60% of the surviving females must produce 3 or more broods of offspring; and surviving females must produce a mean of 15 or more offspring (only the first 3 broods are used for calculating mean reproduction). Survival and reproduction of the Ceriodaphnia were not affected in the Upstream and Downstream samples. The Well #1 sample produced good survival results, however there was a slight toxic effect to the reproduction. The Well #3 sample had a slight toxic effect to the survival, but a much stronger toxic effect with regards to the reproduction. These adverse effects, especially with regards to the reproduction, were expected however, due to the elevated levels of conductivity found in the Well samples. Through internal studies and experience, we have consistently shown that adverse effects begin to show in the reproduction endpoint when conductivity levels exceed 2,500 (jS/cm. Conductivity levels are determined by the varying concentration of salts in a sample. The correlation between conductivity levels and decreased reproduction in Ceriodaphnia was observed in this study as well. The Well # 3 sample had the highest conductivity level (approximately 5,000 uS/cm), and as expected, showed the greatest effect on the number of offspring produced (a 96% reduction compared to the control). The Well #1 sample also showed an adverse effect to reproduction, but not to the same degree (a 66% reduction). Likewise, the two Conductivity Controls, which matched the conductivity levels of the two Well samples, showed similar reductions in the reproduction rate. Both the Upstream and Downstream samples resulted in no toxicity or adverse effects. The results of this study seem to indicate that the elevated conductivity levels found in the Well #1 and Well #3 samples may have contributed to the adverse effects seen with the Ceriodaphnia test species.
