NOEC Discussion of Results One lab control, tested concurrently with the Downstream sample, was used for all data analyses and comparisons. This control met the EPA protocol's minimum test acceptability criteria, as well as all internal requirements under our Quality Assurance Program. There was no toxicity observed with the Upstream, Downstream, and Well #1 samples. However, the Well #3 sample did show toxicity to both survival and reproduction at the 100% concentration. The adverse effects seen in the Well #3 sample was somewhat expected, due to the elevated levels of conductivity found in the samples. The Weil #3 sample had the highest conductivity level (about 5,000 ^lS/cm) of the four samples being tested. From internal studies and other references, we normally see adverse effects to the reproduction endpoint when conductivity levels exceed approximately 2,500 (jS/cm. Conductivity is related to fhe concentration of different salts and ions in a sample. The optimum range for Ceriodaphnia is between approximately 100 and 1,500 jjS/cm. Therefore, the high conductivity levels found in the Well #3 sample may have contributed to the toxicity observed in the test However, it was interesting that the other three samples all had conductivity levels exceeding 2,500 pS/cm (ranging from 3,100 to 4,200 pS/cm), but none of the three resulted in toxic effects. Each of the conductivity controls, which matched the conductivity level of the sample, produced the toxic effects that were expected. The fact that, the other three samples produced no toxic effects, meant that there was most likely something in the sample makeup that was inhibiting the toxic effects and allowing the organisms to survive and reproduce normally atthe higher conductivity levels.
