RANCH SANTA FE ROAD
ALIGNMENT CORRECTION STUDY
INTRODUCTION
This study was initiated by the City of Carlsbad in
response to a number of traffic accidents on Rancho Santa Fe
Road between Cadencia Street and Questhaven Road. The
objective of this study is to provide a proposal required to
construct a safe alignment and improvement of Rancho Santa Fe
Road per federal guidelines.
EXISTING CONDITIONS
1- "S" Curve.
The existing Rancho Santa Fe Road is a 32 feet wide road.
Beginning from 540 feet north of Cadencia Street the
alignment of road consists of reversing curves with radius of
1000 and 600 feet known as a "S" curve. Additionally, there
are two vertical curves of 850 and 350 feet. The existing
design speed of 37 miles per hour is a reduction to the speed
limits preceding and following this stretch of road.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1- "S" Curve.
It is recommended that 1900 foot centeriine radius and
630 foot tangent to be utilize to replace existing "S" curve.
A 600 foot vertical curve will produce a design speed of 55
miles per hour per Cultrans Highway Design Manual. An inlet
and culvert shall be constructed to adequately drain the
water from the low point since storm water sheets across the
street under existing conditions. (See Exhibit A, B and C).
2- Acceleration lane and left turn lane at Cadencia Street:
It is recommended that a 150 foot acceleration lane, 12
feet wide be constructed from Cadencia Street to
northbound traffic of Rancho Santa Fe Road.
Additionally, a 200 foot left turn lane into Cadencia
Street will provide safer traffic movements on this
intersection. (See Exhibit D and E.)
RIGHT-OF-WAY REQUIREMENT
To provide for this improvement it is necessary to
acquire 0.921 acres of land from A.P.N. 223-05-59 and A.P.N,
223-05-54. (See Exhibit F).
