HYDROGEN SULFIDE REPORT Kelfy Ranch Lift Station December 2002
1.INTRODUCTION
As part of the Camion Road Lift Station (CRLS) design development, residents within the project
area have voiced their concerns over the "existing" odors from the Kelly Ranch Lift Station
(KRLS) located adjacent to the Canterbury Community (formerly Kelly Ranch).
The City requested that DHK Engineers, Inc. (DHK) conduct this hydrogen sulfide study at
KRLS to determine if and when hydrogen sulfide was present in the KRLS area.
2.HYDROGEN SULFIDE SURVEY METHODOLOGY
A hydrogen sulfide survey was conducted around the KRLS from October 26 through November
8, 2002 to document existing hydrogen sulfide concentrations. The access hatch was partially
sealed with adhesive tape to provide one opening for the lift station to breathe. Each time the lift
station "draws and fills" a portion of the air within the lift station is discharged through the
opening.
A container (five-gallon bucket) was placed above the opening to allow instrument installation
and simulate "calm wind conditions". Several holes were drilled in the bucket to allow nature air
dissipation. Each day, the data was electronically downloaded and the access hatch seal verified.
Figure 1 illustrates the testing configuration.
H2S Meter
A Drager PAC III Hydrogen Sulfide Meter, with 0 to 100 parts per million (ppm), was used to
monitor hydrogen sulfide. Measurements were automatically taken each minute for the entire
sampling period. Equipment information (PAC III) is provided in Appendix A.

3. HYDROGEN SULFIDE SURVEY RESULTS
Figure 2 provides a graphical summary of the monitoring sessions and is provided in Appendix B.
The electronic data base for the entire sampling period in one-minute intervals is provided in Appendix C.
4. CONCLUSIONS
The monitoring results indicated that the majority of the time (approximately 99%), the lift station
has no hydrogen sulfide venting from the station. On occasions, a peak flow of waste water enters
the wet well and displaces the air through the vent. Under calm or light wind conditions, the
displaced puff of vented air may travel toward the Canterbury Development prior to adequate
dispersion and dissipation.
If the new Cannon Road Lift Station is delayed beyond summer of 2003, it may be warranted to
install a passive carbon system to minimize the impacts of the "puff' release from the wet well.

Single Gas Monitors
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Ammonia (NH3),
Sulfur Dioxide (502)
• User-selectable alarm levels for ACGIH or TRGS 402
• RF shielded
For personnel monitoring under the most demanding
hazardous gas conditions, including offshore oil rigs and
underground mines, this little instrument is tough to beat
for reliability and simplicity. Using Drager sensor technology,
the Pac III provides fast and accurate response to hazardous
gas levels, with an attention-getting 95 dB alarm. Alarm
levels can be set for TWA and STEL. Gas concentration is
continuously shown on the high intensity LED. A datalogging
kit is an optional rental item. It provides graphic or spread
sheet analysis of exposure at TWA, STEL or ceiling values.
