The screw anchors are submitted with a test report that need tcfbe updated. It is 22
years old and was done i0 South Carolina by an engineer registered in that state.
The anchor tests oughfl6 be more current.
The soils .classification reference. also has no UBC category. It would be helpful if the
report was in UBO terms as far as soil .classification and your own soils engineer
ought to review the assumptions for correctness specifiQ to the location of the
structure.
The plans do not specify which Model Number of anchor is going to be used.
I didn't review any of the other corrections from Kurt's ,list dated July 15th•

Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, National Electrical Code and state
laws regulating energy conservation, noise attenuation and access for the disabled. This plan

corrections based on laws and ordinances enforced by the Planning Department, Engineering
Department, Fire Department or other departments. Clearance from those departments may be
required prior to the issuance of a building .Permit.

3. Provide a statement on the Title Sheet of the plans that this project shall comply
with the 1994 use.
• SITE PLAN
4. Provide a fully dimensioned site plan drawn to scale. Show north arrow, property
lines, easements, streets, existing and proposed buildings and structures.
5. Clearly dimension building setbacks from property lines, street centerlines, and
from all adjacent buildings and structur:es on the site plan.
• LOCATION ON PROPERTY
6. When two or more buildings are on the same property, the buildings shall have
an assumed property line between them for the purpose of determining the
required wall and opening protection and roof cover requirements, per Section
503.1. An exception is provided if the combined area of the buildings is within
the limits specified in Section 504 for a single building. If this exception is used,
show how the bu~lding(s) will comply with Sectjo·n 503.
7. When a new buHding is to be erected on the same property as an existing
building, the location of the assumed property line with relation to the existing
building shall be such that the exterior. wall and opening protection of the
existing building meets the criteria of Table 5-A and Chapter 6. Section 503.

• STRUCTURAL
8. The structural calculations call for· poles that have a. larger diameter than shown
on the plans. Please revise the plans.
9. The structural calculations call for the poles to be embedded further into the
ground than shown on the plans. Please revise the plans.
10. The plans and calculations show uplift resistance by screw anchors. Submitted
with the plans was a test re.port for the anchors. Per City of Carlsbad policy, test
reports are an unacceptable method of justifying a product or method. Carlsbad
relies on such agencies as ICBO to evaluate such test reports and to then make
a finding as to their acceptability.

In accordance with your request., we herein provide our comments regarding the review of the strucrural ~
plans and accompanying calculations (referenced above) for the Proposed Shade House for ~go.lan_d.: --~ : <-
Carlsbad, California. Based on our review, we provide the foUowing comments:
~ • Helical screw-type anchors are acceptable from a geotechnical standpoint. Based on our calculations,
we recommewi that the 850-H-S Minute Man Anchors (4 foot long anchor by.8 .. inch diameter helix)
use a maximum allowable pull-out resistance of 2,500 pounds per anchor. Anchor spacing shall be a
minimum of 3 helix diameters (24 inches) from the adjacent anchor.
• In addition, please specify on the plan jf the wood support timbers are to be set into drilled holes
backfilled with l ). compacted sand, or 2). concrete.
