The objectives of the investigation were to determine the existing soil conditions, particularly with regard to the expansive characteristics of the soils or the presence of any fill or loose tppsoils. The investigation consisted of excavating an exploration pit with a back'hoe, logging the soils encountered in the pit, taking an in-place field density test, and obtaining a loose bag sample for possible laboratory testing. Ib/cu ft 1.0-1.5 8.8 104.5 Discussion and Recommendations It is concluded from the findings in the exploration pit and the result of the field density test that the loose topsoil and underlying 6 inches thickness of medium firm silty fine to medium sand should not be used for footing support. It ?s recommended that footings be deepened through these upper loose to medium firm soils and founded in the firm silty fine to medium sands similar to those encountered at a depth'of 1.5 feet in the exploration pit. It is concluded from visual examination and classification of the soils that they would be con- sidered as nonexpansive with respect to volumetric change with change in moisture content.
