Subject: Limited Soils Investigation
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
In June 1991, I conducted a limited field investigation for the
proposed residential addition at the above referenced location
in the City of Carlsbad. An existing single family residence is
located on a small lot in an older part of Carlsbad. A new
structure is proposed with a second story bedroom and office on
the north side (backyard area) of the existing residence. This
area is nearly level and apparently graded with the original
grading of the and is presently covered with lawn.
Several dug pits were excavated in the proposed building area.
In place density testing was performed at various levels with
all results ranging from a low of 84% to a high of 91% relative
compaction. Representative soil samples were obtained and'••'.'.. . " ..'••• '•-
laboratory testing performed on those samples to help evaluate
pertinent soil characteristics. :
Based on those laboratory test results and our experience with
similar soils ...and projects, we are making ,; the following
recommendations. It should be noted that .the foundations soils
are considered -• :to be non-expansive""" and no special design
considerations are necessary to compensate for expansive

characteristics.
Minimum foundations shall be 15 inches wide and founded 18 inches
below grade and shall have four #4 bars of reinforcing steel.
Two bars shall be placed near the top of foundation and the other
two bars shall be placed three inches from the bottom of
foundation. These recommendations are based upon soil
characteristics only, and do not reflect any possible design
considerations imposed by the building design which might increse
these recommendations. The proposed foundations may be designed
utilizing an allowable soil bearing value of 1700 psf. This value
may be increased by 1/3 for the design of load that includes wind
and seismic analysis.
The anticipated total and/or differential settlements for the
proposed struct.rure may be considered to be within tolerable limits
provided the recommendations presented in this report are followed.
A continuous 8" wide footing shall be placed continuous along
the existing foundation. Connecting #5 re-bar dowels shall be
set into the existing foundation and extend 6" into new footings
on 24" centers. Underpinning the existing foundation is not
necessary except the last 3' at the-ends of the structure.

^This Engineer shall inspect all foundations prior to placement
of any concrete.
It is the responsibility of the Developer or their representative
to ensure that the information and recommendations contained herein
are brought to the attention of the Engineer and Architect for
the project and incorporated into the project plans and
specifications. It is further their responsibility to take the
necessary measures to insure that the contractor and his
sub-contractors carry out such recommendations during construction.
In conclusion, the site is acceptable for the construction of
the proposed residential addition.
