Design takes into account lead equivalent of existing walls. Tables cited are from the National Council on Radiation Protection Reports 49 or 35. Table values have been reduced to conform with new limits adopted by the State of California as of Jan. 1, 1994. These specify no more than 2 mrem to the general public in any one hour and no more than 100 mrem in any one year. For occupational exposures, the revised rule allows 5000 mrem total effective dose equivalent per year. Information concerning occup- ancy, beam orientation, room plans and other items or values was furnished by the user, the contractor, or the architect and is assumed as correct. ARPS is not re- sponsible for determination of pre-existing lead in barriers. If any assumptions are in error, or if any modifications have been made in plans, notify ARPS at once. Beam orientation is toward the chest board and floor unless otherwise noted. Since little or no saving is realized by specifying lead thickness less than 0.8 mm, the minimum weight specified is 2-lb lead. Shielding height remains at 80" unless otherwise specified. Shielding should be overlapped 1/2" at [joints. Wall holes, as for conduit, should be suitably baffled. The area behind metal door handles requires no lead unless otherwise noted. Survey radiation measurements, if specified, were made with a Victoreen 470-A zonization chamber recently calibrated. Primary beam measure- ments are made with an MDH X-Ray Monitor calibrated yearly against Victoreen standards. State law specifies ""No user shall permit the operation of x-ray equipment unless the equipment and the installation meet the applicable requirements of the regulations and are appropriate for the procedures to be performed".
