Direct Shear Test A 'direct shear test was performed on representative samples of Soil Types 1 and 3 for strength parameters in the lateral load and bearing capacity calculations. Three soil specimens were pre-pared by molding them in 2½-inch diameter, 1-inch high rings to 90% of the corresponding maximum dry density and optimum moisture content and soaked overnight. The specimens were loaded with normal loads of 1, 2, and 4 KSF respectively and sheared to failure in an undrained shear. The results are presented below. ' Wet Angle of Apparent Soil Density mt. Inc. Cohesion Location TvDe (Ref) ö (degree) C. (Dsf) TP 1@1' 1 121.8 31 186 TP 2@6' 3 124.6 25 201 C. In-Place Dry Density and Moisture Content In-place dry densities and moisture content of representative chunk soil samples were determined using the water displacement method. The test results are presented on the logs at the corresponding locations. The percent ratio of the' in-place dry densities to the corresponding maximum dry densities are also determined and included on the excavation logs. IV. RECOMMENDATIONS The following recommendations are consistent with site soil condi- S 'tions. Specific footing and slab recommendations are based upon existing' soil characteristics and should not supersede more restrictive requirements set forth by the project architect or structural engineer. A.Desian -: - The following parameters are based upon site soil conditions and shou1d.be utilized in foundation/slab designs at the project: 1. AilowábleBearing Value - 1,000 psf (dead plus live loads) The value may be increased by one-third for wind and seismic loading or per the Uniform Building Code, Table 29-B,, for additional widths and depths. ' 2. Coefficient of Friction Value - 0.25. 3. Passive Pressure — 307 pcf. -•-,- r MV ENGINEERING, INC • 2450 VINEYARD 'AVENUE, #102 • ESCONDIDO, CAUFORNIA 92029-1229 • 6191743 1214 $0tJ3 IF3TUIQ PEaC lIST lOt PIVEST)OAT,o.e cuuC*i wvuTmanoles • • - 2 FOUNDATION AND BLAB RECOMMENDATIONS PAGE 3 .30 HOOVER STREET, CARLSBAD APRIL 1. 1991 B. Foundations 1 • New structures should be supported by foundations which extend into firm soils below a depth of five feet from existing surface levels (see Plate 5). Actual foundation depths and reinforcement should be designed by the project structural engineer utilizing the indicated design parameters at the recommended depths. 2. New continuous foundations adjacent to existing footings should be constructed in staggered sections which do not exceed a length of five feet. C. Slab-On-Grade Floors 1. Slab-On-Grade: Prior to construction of all concrete slab structures planned to be placed on existing grades, the upper - soil should be removed and recompacted to 90% of the -,.,corresponding maximum dry density. The removal depths will be on the order of two feet from existing surface, levels. '2. WAll interior slabs must be a minimum of four inches in thick- ness reinforced with #3 reinforcing bars spaced 24 inches on center each way, placed one and one-half inches below the top of the slab. Use four inches of clean sand (SE 30 or greater) beneath all slabs. A six-nil plastic moisture is recommended, and, .if used, must be placed mid- height in the sand. 3. Provide contraction joints consisting of sawcuts spaced 12 feet on center each way within 72 hours of concrete pour - rfX all interior slabs • The sawcuts' must be a minimum of one-half inch in depth and must not exceed three-quarter inch in depth or the reinforcing may be damaged. All underground utility trenches beneath interior and exterior slabs should be compacted to a minimum of 90% of the maximum dry density of the soil unless otherwise specified : - by the respective agencies. - All exterior slabs (walkways, patios, etc.) must be a minimum of four inches in thickness reinforced with #3 reinforcing bars spaced 24 inches on center each way, placed one and one- inches below the top of the slab. Provide contraction --.' joints consisting of sawcuts spaced six feet on center each : way within 72 hours of concrete pour. The depths of the sawcuts should be as described in Item #2 above. - MV ENGINEERING, INC • 2450 VINEYARD AVENUE, #102 • ESCONDIDO CAUFORNIA 92029-1229 • 6191743-121 2-1 -- - - - - -.-- - - FOUNDATION AND BLAB RECOMMENDATIONS PAGE 4 jO ROOVER STREET. CARLSBAD APRIL 1. 3991 Re-entrant Corners - Special attention should be given to any "re-entrant corners" (±270 degree corners) as generally shown on the enclosed Plate 6 and curing practices (during and after the concrete pour) to limit cracking. Supplemental - The concrete reinforcement recommendations provided herein should not be considered to preclude the development of shrinkage related cracks, etc.; rather these recommendations are intended to minimize this potential. If shrinkage cracks do develop, as is expected from concrete, reinforcements tend to limit the propagation of these - features. These recommendations are believed to be reasonable -and in keeping with the local standards of construction practice. It should be noted that the added weight of the planned addition represents a changed condition which may result in some cracking of rigid surfaces, particularly near the juncture areas. These are expected features which are cosmetic in nature and will not -reflect geotechnical instability. Finalized improvement and foundation plans should be reviewed '..;by this office prior to construction. *."LIMITATIONS . The conclusions and recommendations provided herein have been based on all available data obtained from our field investiaation and 41at analyses, s well as our experience with and formational materials located in the general area. The materials encountered on the project site and utilized in our laboratory testing are believed representative of the total area; however, earth materials may vary in characteristics between excavations. Of necessity we must assume a certain degree of continuity between 'exploratory excavations and/or natural exposures. It is necessary, - therefore, that all observations, conclusions, and recommendations be verified during the grading operation. In the event discre- pancies are noted, we should, be contacted immediately so that an inspection can be made and additional recommendations issued if - required. -. The recommendations made in this report are applicable to the site .. at the time this report was prepared. It is the responsibility of T the owner/developer to insure that these recommendations are carried out in the field. •' 4 ; •( - •'•t •-;• .-• • • '?-..• •- • .1 ----"-- --'• •' - - - - Mv - ,ENGINEERING, INC.• 2450 VINEYARD AVENUE, #102 • ESCONDIDO, CAUFORNIA 92029.1229 • 619/743-1214 QWTWAWAL PMMT pOUNDAT ION AND BLAB RECOMMENDATIONS PAGE 5 jO HOOVER STREET, CARLSBAD APRIL 1. 1991 It is almost impossible to predict with certainty the future performance of a property.
