Soils Investigation
For Addition to
Carlsbad City Library
Carlsbad, California
Gentlemen:
This is to report the findings and recommendations from a soils investigation at the site
for the proposed addition to the Carlsbad City Library, 1250 Elm Avenue, Carlsbad,
California.
Three test pits were excavated by hand, sand-displacement field density tesrs were taken
at three depths at each location and loose bulk soil samples were taken to the laboratory
for testing. The log of the field soil conditions, the field density tests and laboratory
tests are tabulated below:

Laboratory Compaction Test Results
The maximum diy densities and optimum moisture contents of the fill materials as determined by
the A.S.T.M. D 698-58T method, modified to use 26 blows of a 10 pound hammer falling from
a height of 18 inches on each of 3 layers in a 4-inch diameter 1/30 cubic foot compaction
cylinder, are presented as follows:

Laboratory Direct Shear Tests
Direct shear tests were performed on the soil from Test Pit No. 2, Sample 2, remolded to the
field density. The samples were saturated and drained prior to testing, and the results of these
tests are tabulated below.

Conclusions and Recommendations
It is concluded that the lowest field density of the tested fill soils, (Test Pit No. 2, Sample 2)
was compacted to 92 percent of maximum dry density when compared with the same fill soil
type placed under our inspection for the grading of the original building pad and reported in
our December 2, 1966 report.

It is further concluded that the footings may be supported by either the existing fill soils or
on the underlying natural soils.
The recommended bearing value for footings, at least 12 inches wide and placed at least 12
inches into the compact fill, or medium firm to very firm natural soils is 1900 pounds per square
foot. Lateral loads may be resisted by passive soil pressure determined by assuming an
equivalent fluid density of 190 pounds per cubic foot. A sliding friction factor of 0.4 may
also be used simultaneously.
