that a second-story addition for living purposes will be
added over the rear portion.of the site. . It is planned
that the upper story loads be -transmitted to the existing
footings by the existing walls.- New isolated footings will
be installed to the rearto support a deck. and stairway.
On September 1.6, 1985 the site was inspected by technical
staff from this office. The site contains a one-story
wood-frame structure. Visual inspection and talk with the
owners revealed no -obvious signs -of structural distress.
The site is geologically located on a thick bed of granular
marine sediments which can be considered non-expansive.
The land is flat for a large extent in all directions and
hence the chance for a.landslide'is nil. There are no.known
..geologic or soil stability problems in the immediate area.
The closest known active fault is theElsinore Fault .
approximately 24 miles to the northeast'although'fault
traces are theorized, to be. located offshore extending
parallel to' the coast.
During the ,investigation two shallow test holes were dug
:in the foundation area. Inspection -of the test holes
revealed the upper foot isa loose brown silty sand, a topsoil,
with roots and some organic. Below this exists a brown red
silty sandstone'whi'ch appeared firm by digging. • The.depth
of the existing footing was confirmed to be 12. inches as
specified' by code. There was no existing fill, expansive
clay, Or groundwater encountered during the investigation."

Two.undisturbed samples were taken from the test-holes and..
returned to..the laboratory for-testing. Moisture/density
measurements were made on the paraffin coated samples by.
the water displacement. method. The results ..are presented
on the logs of Test Holes. These data were used for the
direct shear test. Three specimens of the soil.were remolded
.to the inpiace conditions of.moisture/densityin 212--inch.
diameter 1-inch high brass ring molds and sheared .to.failure
under normal loads of .1, 2i and 3 KSF respectively. The
values of..internal .friction.and apparent cohesion derived
from this test were used in the TerzaghiFormula jj
. . accordance with the procedure outlined in Reference 1,
Page 1.71, to compute the allowable bearing capacity.
