SUBJECT: Report of In-Place Density Tests, Proposed Dawn Enterprises
Spec Lots, Chestnut and Highland, Carlsbad, California.
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request, this report has been prepared to es-
tablish the degree of compaction of the prepared natural ground and
compacted fill as tested by the Southern California Testing Laboratory,
Inc. from June 9 through June 11, 1976.
Prior to grading operations, the site was cleared of grass and debris.
Adequate keys'were then made in the proposed fill area in order to es-
tablish a good base for supporting the proposed compacted fills. The
fill, taken from cuts made on the site, was then placed in six (6) to
eight (8) inch lifts and compacted by means of a sheepsfoot roller and
heavy construction equipment.
Field density tests were performed in accordance with A.S.T.M. D-1556-
64. Moisture content was determined for each density sample. The re-
sults and location of the tests are given on the attached figures. Rep-
resentative samples of the tested material were obtained for laboratory
tests.
Laboratory compaction tests to determine maximum dry density and opti-
mum moisture were performed in accordance with A.S.T.M. Test Method
D-1557-70, Method A. The results of the laboratory compaction test are
given on the attached Figure No. 2.
Since there is a transition line between cut and fill running through
the building pad area, it is the recommendation of the Southern Cali-
fornia Testing Laboratory, Inc. that adequate steel be placed in the
footings. This recommendation is based on the tendency of cut and fill
soils to compress differently, resulting in cracking of footings and

unequal structural support. Two No. 4 bars in the top and two No. 4
bars in the bottom of the foundation, extended ten feet each side of
the transition line, should tend to reduce the cracking resulting
from differential movement.
In addition the prevailing foundation soils were visually inspected.
Our inspection indicated that the foundation soils consisted of medium
dense red/brown silty sands. Based on our experience with similar
soils near the subject site, it is our opinion that the soils are non-
detrimentally expansive and the site is suitable for the intended use.
All footings should be designed in accordance with the minimum require-
ments set forth by the most recent edition of the Uniform
and with the minimum requirements set forth by the City of(^Oceansideo
It is recommended that footings not be founded nearer than five (5) 4
feet measured horizontally inward from the face of slopes. Slopes
should be planted with erosion resisting plants and natural drainage
should be directed away from the top of all slopes.
