SUBJECT: CRIB WALL DRAINAGE Aviara Carlsbad, California
Gentlemen:
At your request, we have reviewed the calculations prepared by
Retaining Walls Company for the proposed crib walls. In general,
the calculations appear to be in conformance with the intent of our
recommendations. However, the possibility of seepage forces are
not accounted for in the design. It is our opinion that either
seepage forces should be accounted for, or they should be eliminat-
ed by installing an appropriate back-drain. The attached Figure
I presents our recommended crib wall backdrain system. We
recommend that these drains be installed behind all walls, or that
the walls be backfilled (both behind the walls, and in the cribs)
with free-draining granular material. The material should be
tested by San Diego Geotechnical Consultants to determine its
suitability as backfill.

SUBJECT: BEARING CAPACITY FOR CRIB WALL$ Aviara
Carlsbad, California !
Genthmfm:
A8 requested by Mr. Steve Crosby of Retaining Walls Company, we
calculated ths beaiing capacity for crib walls founded on 18 inches
of crushed rock oier formational material. The calculation is
based on the asaumption that the entire load of the wall is carried
by the 6 inch wide: members at the base. It is assumed that the
base of Me wall is founded a minimum of 18 inches below lowest
adjacent grade. The crushed rock should extend a minimum of 18
inches below the diottom of the lowest crib members, and should
extend a minimum of 18 inches outside the crib members. The
allowable bearing &pacity for this condition is 5,000 psf. We
recommend that the +shed rock contain no particles greater than
3 inches, and no more than 10 percent finer than the No. 4 U. S .
Standard Sieve. Some compactive effort should be applied to the
rock to ensure the ,maximum rtrenqth 02 the material.
