on all sprinkler systems shall be electrically supei vised Alaim, supervisory and trouble
signals shall be distinctly different and shall be automatically transmitted to an approved
central station, remote supervising station or proprietary supei vising station as defined in
NFPA 72 or, when approved by the fire code official, shall sound an audible signal at a
constantly attended location Approved audible devices shall be connected to every
automatic sprinkler system Such sprinkler water-flow alarm devices shall be activated by
water flow equivalent to the flow of a single sprinkler of the smallest orifice size installed
in the system Alarm devices shall be provided on the exterior of the building in an
approved location Where a fire alarm system is installed, actuation of the automatic
sprinkler system shall actuate the building fire alarm system (Attachment #8)
5.3 Building Access/Doors
Where access is required in CFC Section 503, fire apparatus access roads shall be provide<
within 150 feet of all portions of the exterior walls of the first story of the building o
facility as measured by an approved route
Fire apparatus access roads shall have an unobstructed width of not less than 20 feet
except for approved security gates in accordance with Section 503 6, and an unobstructec
vertical clearance of not less than 13 feet 6 inches The fire code official shall have th<
authority to require an increase in the minimum access widths where they are madequat*
for fire or rescue operations Fire apparatus access roads shall be designed and maintamec

shall be determined by the fire code official Dead-end fire apparatus access roads ir
excess of 150 feet in length shall be provided with an approved area for turning around fin
apparatus The grade of the fire apparatus access road shall be within the limits estabhshec
by the fire code official based on the fire department's apparatus Fire departmen
vehicular access exists on the all four sides of the building
CFC Section 2306 6 1 also states that a minimum of one access door shall be provided ir
each 100 lineal feet, or fraction thereof, of the exterior walls which face required fin
apparatus access roads for areas exceeding 12,000 sq ft The warehouse space does no
exceed 12,000 sq ft , therefore the access doors are not requned (Attachment #9}

engineering analysis lo be adequately protected by the auto
malic sprinklei system provided The engmeeiing analysis
shall consider the ability of the sprinkler system to dehvei the.
higher density required by the higher ha?ard commodity The
higher density shall be based on the actual storage height of the
pile 01 rack and the minimum illowable design area for sprin-
kler operation as set foith in the density/area figures provided
in NFPA 13 The contiguous .irea occupied by the higher ha?-
ard commodity shall not exceed 120 square feet (111 m0) and
additional areas ot higher hazaid commodity shall be separated
from other such areas by 25 feet (7620 mm) or more The sprin-
kler system shall be capable of delivering the highei density

ure 12321 2(e) shall be permuted to be reduced by 50 per
cent but shall not be reduced to less than 2000 ft! (180 mft)
12 3 2 1 5 9 Where solid flat botton, combustible pallets arc
used with storage height up to and including 25 ft (7 6 m), the
densities that are indicated in the design curves shown in Fig
ure 12 3 2 1 2(a) through Figure 12 >i '2 1 2(g), based on con-
ventional pallets, shall be increased 20 percent for the given
area The percentage shall be applied to the density deter
mined in accordance with Figure 1232151 The increase in
density shall not apply where in-rack sprinklers arc installed
123216* The minimum wncr supply requirements for a
hydrauhcally designed occupancy hazard fire control sprin
kler system shall be determined by adding the hose stream
demand from Table 12 3 2 1 6 to the water supply for sprin
klers determined in, 12 321 This supply shall be available
for the minimum duration specified in Table 12321 6 (Set
Section C8 )
1232161 An allowance for inside and outside hose shall
not be required where tanks supply sprinklers only
1232 1 62 Where pumps taking suction from a private
fire service mam supply sprinklers only, the pump need not
be sized to accommodate inside and outside hose Such
hose allowance shall be considered in evaluating the avail
able water supplies

tion to the calculations for the design area for that hazard, or
(3) For systems with multiple hazard classifications where the
higher classification only lies within single rooms less than
or equal to 400 ft2 in area with no such rooms adjacent,

(b) Water demand of sprinklers installed in concealed
spaces or under obstructions such as ducts and cutting

(7) Where inside hose stations are planned or are required,
the following shall apply
(a) A total water allowance of 50 gpm (189 L/min) for a
single hose station installation shall be added to the
spnnkler requirements
(b) A total water allowance of 100 gpm (378 L/rnin) for

of 5000 ft1 (465 m*) or less or for additions or modifications to
existing pipe schedule systems sized according to the pipe
schedules of Section 14 5
11224 Table 11221 shall be used in determining the mini

11 2 2 5 The pipe schedule method shall be permitted for
use in systems exceeding 5000 ft* (465 ms) where the flows

accounted for when determining acceptable residual pressure
at the top level of sprinklers The friction loss of this device [in
psi (bar)] shall be added to the elevation loss and the residual
pressure at the top row of sprinklers to determine the total
pressure needed at the water supply
11229 The lower flow figure of Table 11221 shall be permit-

the potential areas of fire are limited by building size or compart

the minimum duration specified in Table 112311
11 2 3 1 3 An allowance for inside and outside hose shall not
be required where tanks supply sprinklers only

SECTION 2304
DESIGNATION OF HIGH-PILED STORAGE AREAS
2304 1 General High piled storage areas, and portions of
high-piled storage areas intended for storage of a different
commodity class than adjacent areas, shall be designed and
specifically designated to contain Class I, Class II Class HI
Class IV or high-hazard commodities The designation of a
high piled combustible storage area or portion thereof
intended for storage of a different commodity class, shall be
based on the highest hazard commodity class stored except as
provided in Section 2304 2
2304 2 Designation based on engineering analysis The des-
ignation of a high-piled combustible storage area, or portion
thereof is allowed to be based on a lower hazard class than that
of the highest class of commodity stored when a limited quan-
tity of the higher hazard commodity has been demonstrated by
engineering analysis to be adequately protected by the auto-
matic sprinkler system provided The engineering analysis
shall consider the ability of the sprinkler system to deliver the
higher density required by the higher hazard commodity The
higher density shall be based on the actual storage height ot the
pile or rack and the minimum allowable design aiea tor sprin-
kler operation as set forth in the density/area figures provided
in NFPA 13 The contiguous aiea occupied by the higher haz-
ard commodity shall not exceed 120 squaie feet (111 m') and
additional areas of higher ha/ard commodity shall be separated
from other such areas by 25 feet (7620 mm) or more The spnn
kler system shall be capable of delivering the higher density
282
over a minimum area of 900 square feet (84 m ) for wet pipe
systems and 1 200 square feet (11 m2) for dry pipe systems
The shape of the design area shall be in accordance with

ducted, aisles .shall be kept clear of storage, waste material and
debris Fire department access doors, aisles and exit doors shall
not be obstructed During restocking operations using manual
slocking methods a minimum unobstructed arsle width of 24
inches (610 mm) shall be maintained in 48-inch (1219 mm) or
smaller aisles, and a minimum unobstructed aisle width of
one-half of the required aisle width shall be maintained m
aisles greater than 48 inches (1219 mm) During mechanical
stocking operations, a minimum unobstructed aisle width of 44
inches (1118 mm) shall be maintained in accordance \vith
