FIELD EXPLORATION
.'Subsurface conditions were explored by excavating three
exploratory borings with a 4 inch diameter hand auger. Auger
holes ranged from 2.5' to 3.0' in depth. Logs of the auger holes
are included in this report in Appendix I. Field exploration was
preformed on September 25, 1990 by one of our staff engineers who
logged the test pits and obtained representative samples of
material for laboratory testing. The approximate location of the
- • hand auger borings are indicated on the enclosed Geotechnical Map
(Plate 1)
EARTH MATERIALS

The site is blanketed by a thin layer of soil generated by
landscaping which is underlain by terrace deposits
- The terrace deposits consist of light brown to yellowish brown
silty fine to medium sands which are slightly moist to moist and
medium, dense -to dense. Based on our ,observations the materials

GROUNDWATER
Groundwater was not encountered in our exploratory holes, and
there is no evidence of near-surface groundwater on or in the
immediate vicinity of the site. Groundwater is not anticipated to
affect site development. It should be noted however, that these
observations reflect site conditions at the time of this
investigation and do not preclude changes in local groundwater
conditions in the future.
FAULTING AND REGIONAL SEISMICITY
No known active or potentially active faults are shown on
published maps in the vicinity of the site (Jennings, 1975). No
. evidence for faulting was observed in the immediate area.
There are a number of faults in the Southern California area
which. are considered active and which would have an effect on the
site in the form of ground shaking, should they be the source of
an earthquake These include the San Andreas Fault, the San
Jacinto Fault, the Elsinore Fault and the Coronado Bank Fault
Zone. Recent studies in the vicinity of Rose Creek suggest that -
the Rose Canyon Fault is probably active. .
The possibility of ground acceleration (Greensfelder, 1974), or
shaking, at the site may be considered as approximately similar
GeoSoits, Inc.
MR. JOHN BEERY OCTOBER 1, 1990
W.O. 1248-SD PAGE 5
to' the Southern California region as a whole. The relationship of
the site location to the major mapped faults within Southern
California is indicated on the Fault Map of Southern California
, (Figure, 2). Repeatable high ground acceleration (Ploessel and
Slosson, 1974) on the property will likely not exceed 27
assuming a magnitude 6.5 on the Rose Canyon Fault or offshore
extension located approximately 6 miles to the southwest Zone 4
seismic design parameters should be applied
• Other Hazards Considered
The-following listing includes other seismic related hazards that
'have -been considered for our evaluation of the site. These
hazards are considered negligible and/or completely mitigated as
a result of typical site development procedures
* Surface Fault Rupture
* Ground Lurching or Shallow Ground Rupture
* Liquefaction
* Seismic settlement or consolidation
* Potential for tsunamis

the recommendations presented below are incorporated into the
final design and construction phase of development.
I
FOUNDATIONS
General
Considering that terrace deposits are just below the thin layer
of landscaping, recommendations for site preparation would
consists of the following, All landscape or otherwise
- - deleterious materials should be removed from the area of the
.proposed addition. For slab support any remaining loose
materials should be properly recompacted or removed and replaced
with clean sand. -.
Minor cracking between the old and new portions of the residence
- should be anticipated due to initial minor settlement of the new
'foundation system and differential response by the two separate
- -'
structures'-to seisinic shaking and other normal vibrations
-• •• ' ••• • \
;Tominimizethe dx-ffrentia1 response ,of the two structures, we
would recommend doweling the existing footing into the proposed
foundation system using #3 reinforcement bars placed on 18 inch
centers The dowels should be secured into the existing footing
using a nonexpansive high bond strength epoxy or equivalent

Foundations . *
Design: -
.1. Continuous strip and spread footings may be used to support.
the proposed addition, provided they are founded entirely in
terrace material
2 An allowable bearing value of 1,500 pounds per square foot
may be used for design of footings Continuous strip
..footings should maintain a minimum width 15 inches and depth
of 18 inches Spread footings should maintain a minimum
Yconcrete to soil surface area of 4 square feet and maintain
a minimum depth of 18 inches The bearing value may be
increased by one-third for seismic or other temporary load
3. An allowable coefficient of friction of 0.4 may be utilized
in, .the design for the concrete against bedrock materials
- with the dead load forces. .
* . - - •
- . -
L .' . , -
4 Passive earth pressure of 250 pounds per square foot per
foot of terrace material may be utilized in the design with
aniaximum earth pressure of 2,500 pounds per square foot
5 When combining passive pressure and frictional resistance,
the passive pressure component should be reduced by one-
third For design of isolated poles, the allowable passive
earth pressure may be increased by one hundred percent

- •'. 6. All. footings should maintain a minimum horizontal distance
of seven feet between the outside bottom edge of the footing
and the face of any adjacent descending slope
' •'. .
Construction:
,Based upon, our observations and test data, low expansive soil
exists onsite
All footings should be reinforced with a minimum of two No.'
4 reinforcing bars, one placed near the top and one placed
near the bottom of the footings or as required by the
project structural engineer.
2 A grade beam, reinforced as above, and at least 12 inches
wide should be provided across any large entrances, where
continuous footings would otherwise be interrupted The
base of the grade beam should be at the same elevation as
the bottom of the adjoining footings
3. If moisture condensation is undesirable, the concrete slabs
--should be underlain with a moisture barrier consisting of a
minimum of6-mi1 polyvinyl chloride or equivalent membrane,

4. Concrete slabs should be reinforced with a minimum of 6 inch
by 6 inch, No. 10 by No. 10 welded wire mesh or No. 3
reinforcement bars placed on 24 inch centers in two
'.' directions. Slab reinforcement should be supported to
ensure placement near the vertical midpoint of the slab
5 No specific presaturation is recommended for these soil
conditions However, all areas where concrete is to be
poured should be properly moistened prior to concrete
placement
• ' Additional Site Improvements
Recommendations for exterior concrete flatwork or swimming pool
design and construction can be provided upon request
If in the future, any additional improvements are planned for the
site, recommendations concerning the geological or geotechnical
aspects of design and construction of said improvements could be
provided upon request
'Additional Grading
This of fie should' be notified in advance of any fill placement,
' or trench backfilling at the site.

--. Footing -Trench Excavation •
All .footing trench excavations should be observed by a
, representative of this office prior to placing reinforcement
GeoSoils, Inc.
MR. JOHN BEERY OCTOBER 1, 1990
W.O. 1248-SD PAGE 11
Footing 'trench spoil and any excess soils generated from utility
trench excavations should be compacted to a minimum relative
compaction of 90 percent if not removed from the site
Drainage
Positive site drainage should be maintained at all times
Drainage should not flow uncontrolled down any descending slope.
Water should be directed away from foundations and not allowed to
pond and/or seep into the ground. Pad drainage should be
directed toward the street or other approved area Due to the
nature Of on site soils, combined with the hardness and
.permeability of the terrace materials, local areas of seepage may
'develop due to irrigation or heavy rainfall. Minimizing
irrigation will lessen this potential If areas of seepage
develop,"recommendations for minimizing this effect could be
..' ". provided upon request. /
Landscape Maintenance
5' ir
Water., is known to 'weaken the inherent strength of all earth
materials and cause soil expansion Only the amount of
41 irrigation necessary to sustain plant life should be provided
.
Overwatering the 'landscaped areas could adversely affect the
proposed or existing site improvements
