Figure 1 shows the approximate location of tile site. CTE has reviewed the referenced soils report and generally agrees with the conclusions and recommendations contained therein. However, based on our site-specific investigation andlaboratory testing, it is our opinion that certain recommendations . regarding foundations and slabs-on-grade require revisions. - Therefore, the following - recommendations are intended to supercede those stated in the referenced soils report. Our investigation activities included surficial reconnaissance, excavation of exploratory test pits,' -' - laboratory testing, and reference review. Presented below is -a summary of our investigation 'activities and geotechnical reômniendations for the site. - - - 1.0 Site Background, Field Investigation and Existing Conditions Located at 1876 High Ridge Avenue, in Carlsbad, California, the site was previously graded in the mid 1980s as part of the residential development Tract No. 76-15, Palisades Point, Carlsbad, - - California. It is our understãndiñg that the proposed improvements will consist of a one- or two- - - stoly addition to the residential structure. - - -GEOTECHNICAL AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING TESTING 4 References: - Preliminary Soils Engineering Investigation Tract No.. 76-15, Palisades Point -Carlsbad, California Prepared by Action Engineering Dated June 30, 1983 Mr. Rafuse: 4 4 - - ..•, . Geotechnical Recomehdations Page 2 Proposed Additions to Single Family Residence 1876 High Ridge Avenue Carlsbad, California 92009 May 13, 1999 Job No. 10-3434 . 1.1 Subsurface Exploration . Two exploratory test pits were excavated on May 7, 1999. Figure 2 shows the approximate location of our explorations. Our investigation found that the site is underlain by compacted fill soils, which are underlain by dense terrace deposits. Compacted fill soils consist generally of dense, moist, silty sands, with minor cobbles. Underlying Quaternary Terrace Deposits generally consist of dense, moist silty sands. 1.2 Existing Footings Existing footings were exposed along the northeast side of the existing stricture where the additions are proposed. Existing footings were observed to bear on fill materials approximately one foot below grade. The attached figures TP-1 and TP-2 provide a cross-sectional view of the existing footings and their adjacent subgrade. Based on our review of the referenced soils report as well as our recent field investigation, we anticipate the existing single-family residence to be founded entirely in properly compacted fill materials. * 2.0 Laboratory Testing Laboratory tests were conducted on representative soil samples for classification purposes and to evaluate physical properties and engineering characteristics. Laboratory tests for particle-size distribution and direct shear characteristics were conducted. 2.1 Expansive or Compressible Soils As stated, surficial and underlying soils at the site are generally granular and dense in nature with • . very low expansion potential and very low to low compressibility. Therefore, existing and standard shallow foundations at the site require no special design for detrimentally expansive or compressible oy soils. 3.0 Foundations and Slab Recommendations The recommendations provided below should be considered preliminary, CTE reserves the right to revise our recommendations pending actual field conditions exposed during construction. - 3.1 Foundations Continuous and isolated spread footings are suitable for use at this site. However, addition footings . should not straddle cut/fill interfaces. Based on our explorations, we anticipate footings will be - founded entirely in compacted fill materials. Foundation dimensions and reinforcement should be based on allowable bearing values of 2000 pounds per square foot (psf) for footings founded in ,\\CTE_SERVER\PROJECTS\10-3434\Geotechnical Recomendations.doc • •,'• •'•. •••'z F Geotechnical Recomendations Page 3 Proposed Additions to Single Family Residence 1876 High Ridge Avenue Carlsbad, California 92009 May 13, 1999 Job No. 10-3434 compacted fill materials. The allowable bearing value may be increased by one third for short duration loading which includes the effects of wind or seismic forces Addition footings should be at least 12 or 15 inches wide for one- and two-story structures, respectively, and embedded at least 18 inches in compacted fill materials. Reinforcement for continuous foofings should consist of four #4 reinforcing bars; two placed near the top and two placed near thebottom. Isolated footing reinforcement should be designed by the project structural engineer. Addition footings should be doweled to existing footmgs usmg #4 reinforcing bars on 18- '-. inch centers. - If minimum footing embedment causes footings to span a transition from cut to fill, all footings •/ should be deepened to bear directly upon underlying Quaternary Terrace Deposits. Deepened footings should have minimum dimensions and reinforcing steel as described above; however, actual designs may be based on allowable bearing values of 2500 pounds per square foot (isf) 3.2 Foundation Settlement The anticipated total and/or differential settlements for the proposed addition structures may be considered to be within tolerable limits provided the recommendations presented in this report are ' followed. Post construction settlements are estimated to be less than 1-inch total and less than 'A- inch differential for properly constructed foundations. 3.3 Foundation Setback -4, All footings for structures should be designed such that the minimum horizontal distance from the face of adjacent slopes to the outer edge of the footing is a minimum of 10 feet. These setback requirements may require adjustment of location or deepening of proposed addition footings. -• 3.4 Lateral Load Resistance : The following recommendations may be used for shallow footings on the site. Foundations placed in native or compacted fill materials may be designed using a coefficient of friction of 0.35 (total frictional resistance equals coefficient of friction times the dead load). A design passive resistance vlue of 300 pounds per square foot per foot of depth may be used. The allowable lateral resistance - can be taken as the sum of the frictional resistance and the passive resistance, provided the passive - '.- resistance does not exceed two-thirds of the total allowable resistance. 3.5 Concrete Slab-On-Grade Lightly loaded concrete slabs should be a minimum of 4 inches thick. Minimum slab reinforcement should consist of #3 or #4 reinforcing bars placed on 18- or 24-inch centers, respectively, each way at mid-slab height. In moisture sensitive floor areas, a vapor barrier of ten mil visqueen overlying a three-inch layer of compacted clean sand, gravel, or crushed rock should be installed. A one-inch \\CTE_SERVER\PROJECTS\ 10-3434GeotechrncaI Recomendations dcx Geotechnical Recomendations Page4 Proposed Additions to Single Family Residence 1876 High Ridge Avenue Carlsbad, California 92009 May 13, 1999 Job No. 10-3434 -' .. layer of clean washed sand should be placed above the visqueen to protect the membrane during steel or concrete placement. 4.0Active and At-Rest Pressures Retaining walls up to ten feet high and backfilled using granular, soils may be designed using the equivalent fluid weights given in the Table below. Measures should be taken to prevent a moisture buildup behind all retaining walls. Drainage measures should include free draining backfill materials and perforated drains. These drains should discharge to an appropriate offsite location. Figure 3 is a recommended gravel cfrainage system for on-site retaining walls. 5.0 Construction Observation The recommendations provided in this report are based on the anticipated construction and the subsurface conditions found in our explorations. The interpolated subsurface conditions should be checked in the field during construction to verify that conditions are as anticipated Any earthwork y should be observed and tested to verify that grading activity has been performed according to the recommendations contained within this report.
