We understand that you are seeking to construct an approximately 3,500 square foot mezzanine addition at the south end of the existing structure. Figures 1 and 2 are maps showing the general location of the site and the proposed mezzanine addition. Our reconnaissance was performed to evaluate cwrent site soil conditions vis a vis the soil conditions when we last performed work at this site (CTE, 1998). In general, the results of our investigations indicate that the proposed project can be constructed as planned provided the recommendations presented in this report are followed. Existing fill soils were previously found to be medium to highly expansive and some special consideration will need to be used during construction to mitigate this potential problem. Update Geotechnical Report Proposed Mezzanine Addition Lot 47, Carlsbad Research Center, Carlsbad, California May 23, 2001 LO RECOMMENDATIONS 1. 1 Foundations Page2 CTE Job No. 10-4879 Continuous and isolated spread footings are suitable for use at this site. However, footings should not straddle cut/fill interfaces. From our previous work onsite (CTE, 1996 and 1998), we anticipate that building footings will be founded entirely in properly recompacted fills. Foundation dimensions and reinforcement should be based on allowable bearing values of 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf) for footings a minimum of 12 inches in width and embedded at least 24 inches below the lowest adjacent subgrade. The allowable bearing value may be increased by one third for short duration loading which includes the effects of wind or seismic forces. Minimum footing reinforcement for continuous footings should consist of four No. 5 reinforcing bars; two placed near the top and two placed near the bottom or as per the project structural engineer. Isolated footing reinforcement should be designed by the structural engineer. Proposed footings may be doweled to the adjacent exi~ting footings in order to reduce the potential for differential movements between the buildings, if these movements will be detrimental. Dowels should be epoxied to existing improvements as per the project structural engineer. Based on the preliminary plans as well as the conditions observed at the site, the maximum total static settlement is expected to be on the order of 1.0 niches and the maximum differential settlement is expected to be on the order of0.5 inches. Foundations placed in engineered fill materials may be designed using a coefficient of friction of 0.35 (total frictional resistance equals the coefficient of friction times the dead load). A design passive resistance value of 300 pounds per square foot per foot of depth (with a maximum value of 1,200 pounds per square foot) may be used. The allowabl~ lateral resistance can be taken as the sum of the :frictional resistance and the passive resistance, provided the passive resistance does not exceed two-thirds of the total allowable resistance. 1.4 Concrete Slab-On-Grade Concrete slabs-on-grade should be at least four inches thick for light industrial loads. As a minimum, concrete slabs should be reinforced with #3 reinforcing bars on 18-inch or #4 reinforcing bars on 24-inch centers. All slab reinforcement should be properly supported to ensure placement near mid-height of the concrete. Special design consideration should be given to the type of business and the building's intended use. Heavy machinery or vehicular loads may require aggregate base, thicker slab and increased reinforcement. At a minimum, a two-inch layer of similar material should be placed above the visqueen to protect the membrane during steel and concrete placement. Slabs subjected to heavier loads may require thicker slab sections and/or increased reinforcement. 1.5 Walls Below Grade For the design of subterranean structure walls where the surface of the backfill is level, it may be assumed that the soils will exert a lateral pressure equal to that developed by a fluid with a density-of 38 pcf. The active pressure should be used for walls free to yield at the top at least 0.2 percent of the wall height. For walls restrained so that su.ch movement is not permitted, an equivalent fluid pressure of 58 pcf should be used, based on at-rest soil conditions. The recommended equivalent fluid pressures should be increased by 22 pcf for walls retaining soils inclined at 2:1 (horizontal: vertical) or less. Walls below the water level are not anticipated for the subject site. Consideration should be given to waterproofing the subterranean structure walls to reduce moisture infiltration. If placed, we recommend that all walls be backfilled with soil having an expansion index of 20 or less. The backfill area should include the zone defined by a 1: 1 sloping plane, extended back from the base of the wall. · Retaining wall backfill should be compacted to at least 90 percent relative compaction, based on ASTM D1557-91. Heavy compaction equipment, which could cause distress to walls, should not be used. 1.6 Vehicular Pavements It is unclear at this time if additional pavements will be constructed as part of the currently proposed improvements. However, if paveme,its are proposed they should be constructed in accordance with the following recommendations. Regardless of the pavement method selected, all aggregate base materials and the upper 12 inches of subgrade materials to receive pavements should be compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 95 percent of the laboratory maximum density (as determined by ASTMD 1557). The interpolated subsurface conditions should be checked in the field during construction to verify that conditions are as anticipated. Recommendations provided in this report are based on the understanding and assumption that CTE will provide the observation and testing services for the project. All earthwork should be o\,served and tested to verify that grading activity · has been performed according to the recommendations contained within this report. We have analyzed the 2x6's and found them to be adequate to support the largest duct in the attached weight schedule. The weight of the largest due~ is 36.3 po!Jnds per foot. If the duct work is supported at 8 feet on center maximum, with two supports per duct, the largest point load imparted on the sub purlin would be 145 pounds. The sub purlin can support, in addition-to the roof live load arid self weight, · 256 pounds at the center. Our analysis is. based on the following assumptions: 1. 2, 3. 4. The sub purtins are 2x6@24" o.c. (not 2x4's). The ducts are supported-at eight feet maximum along their length. The largest rectangular duct is a 60" x 28" duct that weighs fess than 36.3 pounds per linear foot. The rectangular ducts have two supports per 9uct with only one support per purlin. The largest round duct is a 32 .. diam~ter duct that weights less than 17 .9 pounds per linear foot. The round· ducts need only one support at 8 feet on center. We did not inspect the structure for conformance to our design criteria. We assume the field inspector will observe the duct supports for-conformance to our criteria and identify area of non- conforma~e for further recommendations.
