• REMODELS. ADDITIONS AND REPAIRS
1. When alterations, structural repairs or modifications or additions are made to an
existing building, that building, or portion of the building affected, is required to
comply with all of the requirements for new buildings, per Section 1134B.2. These
requirements apply as follows:
a) The area of specific alteration, repair or addition must comply as "new"
construction.
b) A primary entrance to the building and the primary path of travel to the
altered area, must be shown to comply with all accessibility features.

DOORS
9. Show or note that all hand-activated door opening hardware meets the following
requirements, per Section 11 33B. 2. 5.2:
a) Latching, or locking, doors in a path of travel are operated with a single
effort by lever type hardware, by panic bars, push-pull activating bars, or
other hardware designed to provide passage without requiring the ability to
grasp the opening hardware.
b) Is to be centered >30" but <44" above floor.
10. Show or note that the maximum effort to operate doors shall not exceed 8-/4
pounds for exterior doors and 5 pounds for interior doors, with such pull or push
effort being applied at right angles to hinged doors and at the center plane of
sliding or folding doors. When fire doors are utilized, the maximum effort to
operate the door may be increased to not exceed 15 pounds. Section 1 133B.2.5.
1 1 . Show or note that the lower 10" of all doors comply with Section 1 133B.2.6, as
follows:
a) To be smooth and uninterrupted, to allow the door to be opened by a

14. Doors in the room shall not swing into the clear floor space required for any fixture.
Maintain the required clearances at the lavatory/water closet without the entry door
swinging into those areas. Section 1115B.3.2.2. (The door can not swing into the
30"x48" clear space in front of lav. Please clarify on the plan.)
• GROUP M OCCUPANCIES
15. Show or note that the proposed general sales, display and office areas are
accessible, per Section 111 OB. 1, as follows:
a) The customer side of sales or checkout stations are accessible.
b) Employee work areas are sized and arranged to provide access to
employees in wheelchairs.
c) Checkstands shall provide: Where are the checkstands?
i) A 36" aisle on the customer side of the checkstand.
ii) Where quick checkstands are provided, >1 shall be accessible.
iii) Where regular checkstands are provided, the number of accessible
checkstands shall be as follows, per table 11B-2:
a) >1 but <4 regular total = 1 accessible.
b) >5 but ^8 regular total = 2 accessible.
c) >9 but <15 regular total = 3 accessible.
d) >15 regular total = 3, + an additional 20%, accessible.
d) Accessible checkstands shall provide a clear check-out aisle width of 36"
with an adjoining counter <38" above finished floor. Note that they will
always be open and be identified by a sign clearly visible to those in
wheelchairs.
• ACCESSIBLE SINKS
16. Per Section 1117B.9, non-commercial kitchen sinks (such as at employee break
rooms, etc.) shall provide the following:
a) A clear floor space at least 30"x 48" shall be provided for forward
approach and shall be on an accessible route. The clear space shall
extend a maximum of 19" underneath the sink.
b) The accessible sink shall be a maximum of Q-Vz deep. The sink shall be
mounted with the counter or rim no higher than 34" above finish floor.
Knee clearance that is at least 27" high, 30" side and 19" underneath the
sink shall be provided. Hot water and drain shall be insulated or otherwise
configured so as to protect against contact. There shall be no sharp or
abrasive surfaces under the sink.
c) Faucet controls and operating mechanisms shall be operable with one
hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist.
Lever operated, push-type and electronically controlled mechanisms are

acceptable. Self-closing valves are allowed if the faucet remains open for
at least 10 seconds.
