Attention: Mr. Jim Hollenbeck
Subject: FOUNDATION INVESTIGATION
Lot 53, Carlsbad Research Center SE Corner of Aston Avenue and Darwin Court
Car 1 sbad , California
Dear Mr. Hollenbeck:
In accordance with your request, we have performed a foundation
investigation at the subject site. Our investigation was performed
in March 1989. The purpose of our investigation was to evaluate
the property with respect to existing geotechnical conditions and
to provide recommendations for precise grading and building foundation design.
With the above in mind, our scope of services included the following:
o Review of available reports and plans for the site and vicinity
(see References) ;
sampling ;
o Two exploratory borings for visual observation, and soil/bedrock
o Laboratory testing of samples obtained;
0 Engineeiing analyses of the data; and,
0 The preparation of this report presenting our findings,
conclusions and recommendations.
SITE DESCRIPTION
J
The subject site consists of a relatively level, previously graded,
generally square, 1.73 acre parcel identified as Lot 53 of the
Carlsbad Research Center development, Carlsbad, California. The
site is bounded by an approximate 4 feet high (maximum) 2:l
(horizontal to vertical) descending fill slope and undeveloped

commercial lot to the northeast, Aston Avenue to the northwest, Darwin Court to the southwest, and an approximate 22 feet high (maximum) 2 : 1 (horizontal to vertical) ascending transition cut/fill slope and undeveloped commercial lot to the southeast.
PREVIOUS SITE GRADING
The subject site was apparently previously graded in two separate phases. The initial phase of earthwork apparently took place
during the grading of Unit No. 2 of the Carlsbad Research Center, and the final phase of earthwork was completed during grading of Unit No. 3 and 4 of the Carlsbad Research Center. Prior to the initial phase of grading, the site consisted generally of gently to moderately sloping ground that descended to the northeast to a generally northwest/southeast trending drainage course. Topographic relief across the site ranged from approximately 254 feet MSL in the southwest portion of the site to approximately 300 feet MSL in the northeast portiw, of the site.
According to the grading plans (see References), it appears that
the earthwork performed during the first phase of grading (Unit No.
2) consisted entirely of fill and the grading performed during the
final phase (Unit Nos. 3 and 4) consisted of both - cut and fill to
achieve grades that presently exist on site. Grading of the subject lot during the initial phase of earthwork (Unit No. 2)
apparently consisted of approximately 15 feet of fill placed in the
northeast portion of the site. Grading performed during the final phase (Unit No. 3 and 4) apparently consisted of approximately 15 feet of cut in the southwest portion of the lot and approximately 6 feet of fill placed in the northeast portion of the site. The approximate location of the transition line between the cut and fill extends generally from the middle of the southeastern property boundary diagonally across the lot to the northwest property corner.
-
Observation and testing during grading operations was performed by San Diego Geotechnical Consultants, Inc. Lot drainage presently exists in the form of sheet flow towards the northeast corner of
i the lot to a storm drain inlet.
PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
We understand that the proposed structure will be one-story, concrete tilt-up type structure with loads typical for this type of - construction. We anticipate that asphalt concrete paved parking
and driveway areas will be provided and that precise grading will
be minor.

Project No. 317.1 March 28, 1989
Page 3
SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION
subsurface conditions were explored by drilling two test borings to depths of 4 and 28 feet. Approximate locations of the test borings
are shown on the Plot Plan, Figure 1. Test borings were drilled
with a truck-mounted bucket auger type drill rig.
The subsurface exploration was supervised by a geologist and
engineer from this office, who visually logged the soils and obtained bulk and undisturbed samples for laboratory testing. The soils were visually classified according to the unified Soil Classification System. Classifications ate shown on the Boring Logs, Figures 2 and 3.
LABORATORY TESTING -
Laboratory testing was performed on bulk and undisturbed samples
obtained during the subsurface exploration. Tests performed include the following:
o Dry Density and Moisture Content
-
(ASTM: - D 2216)
o Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture Content
(ASTM: D 1557)
o Expansion
(UBC: 29-2)
o Direct Shear (ASTM: D 3080)
The relative compaction and degree of saturation of each relatively undisturbed fill soil sample were also determined.
Results of dry density and moisture content determinations are shown on the Boring Logs. Results of remaining laboratory tests
and the relative compaction and degree of saturation determinations are presented on Figures 4 and 5.

Page 4
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
The subsurface materials encountered in the test borings consist.ed of both bedrock and fill. Fill material was encountered in Test
Boring 1 to a depth of approximately 1 foot and in Test Boring 2 to a depth of 26 feet. The fill soils consisted generally of moist to
very moist, firm to stiff, gray-brown to gray-green silty clay and
dark brown clay. The approximately 1 foot thick layer of fill
encountered in Test Boring 1 contained a large amount of angular
gravel and cobble-size fragments of metavolcanic rock. The fill
soils are underlain by hard, highly fractured, metavolcanic rock of
the Santiago Peak Volcanics.
Relative compaction determinations revealed that the fill soils are generally in a well compacted state ranging from 89 to 94 percent relative compaction (average 91 percent). The near surface soils
were found to possess a medium potential for expansion.
GROUNDWATER
Although the fill soils were found to be in a moist condition, no
evidence of permanent seepage or groundwater was encountered in the borings. A subdrain was reportedly placed at the bottom of the former drainage course at the north corner of the site.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1. General
The proposed construction is feasible from a geotechnical
standpoint. Precise grading and foundation plans should take
into account the appropriate geotechnical features of the site.
2. Precise Gradinq
Prior to construction, the site should be cleared of existing vegetation and debris. Removal of the vegetation and debris
will likely disturb the upper 1 foot of the existing pad.
These soils, if left in place, should be scarified, moisture
conditioned and recompacted to at least 90 percent relative
compaction in accordance with ASTM: D 1557.
In order to minimize the potential for differential settlement and eliminate difficult foundation excavation conditions, the
southern or cut portion of the lot should be overexcavated to a
depth of at least 3 feet below lowest finish building pad
elevation and replaced with compacted fill. Fill should be

compacted by mechanical means in uniform horizontal lifts of 6
to 8 inches in thickness. All fill should be compacted to a
minimum relative' compaction of 90 percent based upon ASTM
Laboratory Test Designation D 1557. Rock fragments over 6
inches in dimension and other perishable or unsuitable
materials should be excluded from the fill. All grading and
compaction should be inspected and tested as necessary by the
Geotechnical Engineer. The on-site materials overlying the cut
portion of the site are, in general,. not suitable for use as
compacted fill due to the large amount of rock fragments.
Import soils should possess an expansion index of less than 50 and should be approved by the Geotechnical Engineer.
Due to the hard to very hard nature of the bedrock underlying the southern or cut portion of the site, excavating in this
area will likely be difficult. Heavy ripping should be
anticipated. Materials generated from the cut will likely
consist primarily of oversize rock fragments which will not be suitable for use as compacted fill.
3. Foundation and Slab Recommendations
Footings should be founded entirely in compacted fill.
Footings located adjacent to the tops of slopes should be
extended sufficiently deep so as to provide at least 10 feet of
horizontal cover between the slope face and outside edge of the
footing. Footings located adjacent to utility trenches should have their bearing surfaces situated below an imaginary 1 to 1
plane projected upward from the bottom edge of the adjacent
utility trench. Footings founded as recommended may be
designed for a dead plus live load of 3000 pounds per square
foot. This value may be increased by one-third for wind or
seismic loads. A lateral bearing value of 300 pounds per square foot per foot of depth and a coefficient of friction
between concrete and soil of 0.4 may be assumed. These values
assume that footings will be poured neat.
Footings should have a minimum width of 12 inches and extend to
a minimum depth of 18 inches below lowest adjacent finished grade. An 18 inch deep continuous footing or grade beam should
be placed around the perimeter of structures as a moisture
barrier. Reinforcing steel consisting of a minimum of two No.
4 bars, one placed near the top and one near the bottom, is
recommended in continuous footings/grade beams. All footing
excavations should be inspected by the Geotechnical Engineer
prior to the placement of reinforcing steel to verify that the footings are founded in competent bearing materials.

Floor slabs may be supported directly on compacted fill and
should be designed for the anticipated use and loading of the
slab. As a minimum, floor slabs should be at least 4 inches thick (actual) with minimum reinforcing consisting of No. 3
bars placed at 18 inches on center (two directions) and placed on chairs. Slabs should be underlain by a 4 inch layer of clean sand and a 6-mil visqueen membrane with at least 2 inches of sand placed between the visqueen and the slab. Slab subgrade soils should be thoroughly moistened prior to pouring concrete.
4. Drainage
Positive lot drainage should be maintained to prevent ponding adjacent to structures. Slabs and pavement areas adjacent to
the structure should be poured neat against the perimeter
footings, sealed to prevent water infiltration, and should
slope away from the structures. Landscaped areas adjacent to buildings should slope away from structures at least 5 percent
for a minimum distance of 5 feet. Drainage swales should be
provided to carry excess run-off.
5. Trench Backfill
Trench backfill should be compacted to at least 98 percent relative compaction in accordance with ASTM: D 1557.
6. Asphalt Concrete Parking and Driveway Areas
The asphalt concrete pavement section for parking and driveway areas should be based on R-value testing of the pavement
subgrade soils performed after precise grading is completed.
Based on classification of the existing near surface soils the following pavement section is provided for preliminary design purposes :
3 inches of asphalt concrete over
8 inches of Class 2 (Cal trans) aggregate base.
7. Grading and Foundation Plan Review
When grading and foundation plans for the proposed development are completed, the plans should be reviewed by the geotechnical engineer to assure conformance with the recommendations
presented in this report.
