April, 1992 Filing Category: DESIGN—Steel (038) NONBEARING DRYWALL STEEL STUDS, TRACKS AND ACCESSORIES DIETRICH INDUSTRIES, INC. 500 GRANT STREET, SUITE 2226 PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA-15219 I. Subject: Nonbearing Drywall Steel Studs, Tracks and Accessories. Il. Description: A. General: The nonload-bearing steel studs, channels, tracks and accessory items are used in drywall partition systems. U-chan- nels are also used as ceiling runners and framing. The studs, tracks, chan- nels and accessories are roll formed in various depths with design base metal thicknesses of 0.0346, 0.0283 and 0.0188 inch (Nos. 20, 22 and 25 gauge, respectively). Span tables are based on section properties of the steel studs considering loads, deflections, shear and stress. Drywall Studs: Drywall studs are fabricated from Nos. 25, 22 and 20 gauge steel, Types STN-25, STH-22 and STE-20 in 1/-, 21/2 , 31/2 , 4-, 51/2 and 6-inch web depths as noted in Figure No. 2 and various lengths. Punch outs for electrical piping and horizontal bracing are located along the entire stud length at 24 inches on center as noted in Fig- ure No. 1. Section properties and span heights for the drywall studs are set forth in Tables Nos. I through Ill. Drywall Track Sections: Track or runner section Types TRNB, TRHB, TREB, TRNA, TRF-IA, TREA and HTN are manufactured with hemmed and unhemmed legs for corresponding stud sizes as.noted in Figure No. 3. Unhemmed drywall track sections are made with 1-inch or 1'/4-inch leg heights from Nos. 25, 22 and 20 gauge steel. Hemmed track sections are made with 11/4-inch legs from No. 25 gauge material. Track section legs are toed in to provide a friction grip on studs during installation. Physical section properties are set forth in Tables Nos. IV and V. Resilient Channels: 1. Resilient channels are used to reduce trans- mission of airborne sound through partitions and ceiling assemblies. They are available in Nos. 26, 25 and 20 gauge thicknesses in double-leg or single-leg configurations. The channels are designated, respectively, as RCDS, RCDN or RCDE forthe No. 26,25 or 20 gauge single-leg resilient channels. Both single-leg and double-leg channels have 31/2-inch-long longitudinal slots in the flanges. The channels are applied horizontally at 24 inches maximum spacing over framing spaced at 16 inches on center, maximum. Channels are in- stalled with 0.10-inch-diameter, 3/4-inch-long self-tapping screws at 16-inch intervals through prepunched holes. Ceiling channels are placed 24 inches on center for joists at 16 inches on center and 16 inches on center for joists at 24 inches on center. For ceilings having a 1/2-inch drywall base layer with the long edge parallel to framing, channels are placed 16 inches on center. Twenty-four-inch spac- ing is used for other applications. Channels are spaced 16 inches on cen- ter when spray-applied texture finishes are used over 1/2-inch drywall panels. 2. For use in fire-resistive assemblies, see ICBO ES Report No. 1632. Z-Furring Sections: Z-furring sections are available in 1, 11/2, 2 and 21/2-inch widths in Nos. 26, 25 and 20 gauge, designated ZFS, ZFN and ZFE, respectively. The 11/4-inch holding leg is slightly toed in for a positive grip on insulation. Furring Channels: Furring channels are available in Nos. 26, 25, 22 and 20 gauge in 'B inch or 1V2-inch size and standard lengths of 8, 10 or 12 feet. Special lengths are also available. The channels are used in both ceiling and wall installations with a standard 24-inch spacing. U-Channel: The channel is formed from No. 16 gauge steel and is available in galvanized or black paint finishes. They are available in 3/4, 11/2, 2 or 21/2-inch widths in various lengths. Additional lengths are avail- able. The U-channels are used as lateral bridging to help resist minor axis ro- tation in stud walls. The channels are fastened with No. 6 Type S-12 self-drilling, self-tapping screws into each stud. U-channels may also be used as part of a suspended ceiling grid sys- tem. Accessory Items: Accessory items include backing strips, angles, drywall corner beads, sill screeds and clip angles, all formed from galva- nized steel. Angles are made from galvanized steel in Nos. 26, 25, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14 and 12 gauges. Sizes are 11/4 inch by 11/4 inch, 11/2 inch by 1 inch and 2 inch by 2 inch in 10 foot lengths. Drywall corner beads are available in 0.015-inch-thick material with 11/4-inch flanges. Standard lengths are 6 feet 9 inches, 6 feet 10 inches, 7 feet, 8 feet, 9 feet, 10 feet and 12 feet. Clip angles are available in No. 16 or 14 gauge material. Standard sizes are 1 1/2 inch by 11/2 inch by 33'8 inch, 2 inch by 2 inch by 3/8 inch, 1 1/2 by 11/2 inch by 53/4 inch and 2 inch by 2 inch by 53/4 inch. Clip angles are used to connect studs to U-channels, by welding or screw attachments through prepunched holes, to help reduce minor axis rotation. Material: Dietrich Industries nonbearing steel studs and track are cold formed from steel complying with ASTM A 366-91, ASTM A 446-91, Grade A or ASTM A 568-92 and ASTM A 611-91 or other steels in com- pliance with U.B.C. Standard No. 27-9, Section A 3.2, as indicated in the manufacturer's quality control manual. Steel studs, tracks and accesso- ries are cold formed from steel having minimum yield strength of 33,000 psi. Steel studs, tracks and accessories are galvanized in compliance with ASTM A525. Identification: Each pallet of material has an identifying label indicat- ing the company name, gauge, section type, section nominal depth and yield strength. Each stud and track is identified with the letters 0.1.1., ICBO ES 4782 and minimum base metal thickness embossed onto the member section at 48 inches on center. Ill.
