The corrosion tests from MIL-A-461 46A include both vapor and direct contact corrosion. The vapor corrosion test procedure of paragraph 4.5.3.3.7.1 is: Extrude 15 grams of silicone compound into an 8-ounce (240 ml) glass bottle equipped with a PTFE lined cap. Pour 5 to 10 ml of distilled water over the silicone compound and hang one cleaned 1 in. x 4 in. panel above the compound-and- water mix. Then close the top of the bottle. Pour in a control bottle of the same type 5 to 10 ml distilled water; hang the other 1 in. x 4 in. metal panel above the water; then close the top of the bottle. Maintain both the test bottle and the control bottle at 38C ± 2 (lOOF ±4) for±168 hours (7 days ±4 hours). At the end of this period carefully remove the panels from the bottles. Visually inspect the test panel for corrosion or discioration by comparison with the control panel. The contact corrosion test procedure of paragraph 4.5.3.3.7.3 is: Coat approximately 2/3 of a I in. x 4 in. metal panel with the silicone compound to a thickness of approximately 1/ 16 inch (12 mm). Cure the sealing compound at 25C ± I (77F ± 2) and 50 percent. relative humidity ± 5 for 168 hours ± 4 hours (7 days ± 4 hours). Place the panels into an environment of 95 to 98 percent relative humidity and 49C ± 1 (120F ± 2) for 28 days. At the end of this period remove the sealing compound by peeling and compare the surfaces that had been coated with the uncoated surfaces. . The silicone compound must not cause discloration or corrosive attack when compared to the control panel. When tested per M IL-A-46146A vapor and contact corrosion test methods as described above, N-SW RTV 128 adhesive sealant yields the following results: . . . When adhesion is important, surfaces must be cleaned to remove dirt, oil, grease and surface contaminents. For metals and glass, suitable solvents such as naphtha, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), or 1,1,1-tnichloroethane should be used. For plastics, a cleaning agent that is compatible with the specific plastic should be used. All surfaces should be wiped dry before applying the adhesive sealant. When solvents are used, proper safety precautions must be observed. All solvents must be considered toxic and must be used only in well ventilated areas. Exposure to high vapor concentration must be avoided. When flam- mable solvents are used, storage, mixing and use must be in areas away from heat, sparks, open flames or other sources of ignition. Due to substrate variability, an evaluation should be made to determine bond strength for each specific application. If adhesion testing shows that a stronger bond is desired, use of a primer is suggested. SS 4004, SS 4044, and SS 4179 primers from General Electric Company are recommended for use with these sealants. SS 4179 primer is recommended for evaluation where a stronger bond is desired on a plastic surface. SS 4004 and SS 4044 general purpose primers are for non-plastic surfaces. SS 4004 and SS 4044 primers are identical products, differing only in color (complete information and usage instructions for these primers are contained in a separate product data sheet). Application and Cure Time Cycle N-SIL RTV 122, 'RTV 123 and RTV 128 adhesive sealants may be applied-directly to clean or primed substrates. Where broad surfaces are to be mated, the sealant should be applied in a thin, less than 6mm ('/ in.) diameter, bead or ribbon around the edge of the surface to be bonded. N-SIL adhesive sealants utilize a moisture vapor cure system which releases an alcohol and residual ammonia from the sealant surface during cure. The cure process begins with the formation of a skin on the exposed surface of the sealant and progresses inward through the material. At 25C (77F) and 50010 relative humidity, N-SIL adhesive sealants will form a surface skin that is tack free to the touch in 20 minutes. Once the tack free skin has begun to form, no further tooling of the adhesive sealant is recommended. Because N-SIL adhesive sealants cure by reacting with atmospheric moisture, high humidity will accelerate the cure process, and low humidity will slow the cure rate. Moderate temperature elevation accompanied by elevated humidity will also accelerate the cure rate as illustrated below: CURE CHARACTERISTICS VS. Since cure time increases with thickness, use of these adhesive sealants should be limited to section thicknesses of 6mm (¼ in.) or less. For applications requiring section thick- nesses of greater than 6mm(1/4 in.), two-component RTV compounds from General Electric should be evaluated. Physical Property Development In addition to the effects of temperature and relative humidity, development of maximum bond strength will depend on joint configuration, degree of confinement, sealant thickness and substrate porosity. Normally, suf- ficient bond strength will develop in 12 to 24 hours to permit handling of parts. Stress should not be applied to the bonded joint until full adhesive strength is developed. Eventually the adhesive strength of the bond will exceed the cohesive strength of the silicone rubber adhesive sealant itself. Always allow maximum cure time available for best results. After extended time periods at temperatures in excess of 100C (212F), yellowing of RTV 122 and RTV 128 may be noticed. The yellowing constitutes a color change only and is not of itself an indication of a loss of elastomeric or electrical properties. PACKAGING AND DISPENSING N-SIL RTV 122, RTV 123 and RTV 128 adhesive sealants are supplied ready-to-use in 2.8 fl. oz. aluminum squeeze tubes, 10.3 fl. oz. caulking cartridges, 5 gallon (40 lb.) pails and 55 gallon (450 lb.) drums. Aluminum tubes may be squeezed by hand or with the aid of mechanical wringers which allow more complete removal of material from the tube. The sealant may be dispensed from caulking cartridges by using hand operated caulking guns or air operated guns. Air operated guns will allow greater control and application speed. Both tubes and cartridges are easy to use, can be put into production quickly and require minimal capital investment. Note: Do not exceed 45 psi when using air-powered caulking guns. Bulk containers offer the most economical packaging for volume production. Bulk delivery systems are air operated extrusion pumps which can be coupled to hand or automatic units. Refer to CDS-1541 "The Scalers Equipment Guide" for further information on dispensing equipment for N-SIL RTV 120 series adhesive sealants. Refer to solvent use warnings in the section in surface preparation. HANDLING AND SAFETY Uncured product contact irritates eyes. In case of contact with eyes, immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists, get medical attention. Wearers of contact lenses should not handle lenses until all sealant has been cleaned from the fingertips; sealant will transfer to lenses and cause severe eye irritation. To clean from the skin, wipe very thoroughly with a dry cloth or paper towel, before washing with soap and water. Product releases methanol and ammonia during applica- tion and curing. Use mechanical ventilation to stay below TLV of 25 ppm ammonia. Uncured product contact may irritate the skin. The section does not require that the documen- tation be prepared by a licensed person, only that the documentation be signed by an authorized person who will take responsibi- lity for their correctness in showing compliance with the building energy efficiency standards. For example, computer runs and calculations that are prepared by an unlicensed energy consultant must be signed by the responsible person, such as a registered architect or civil engineer. A copy of Form CF-I, complete and signed, must be permanently printed on the plans. This enables the code enforcement official to verify that the copies of form CF-1 submitted With future permit applications (for modifications to the building) are consistent with the original Form CF-l. The conditioned floor area of a building is usually increased in one of two ways: Space is added to the building, such as additional floors or a new wing. Heating and/or cooling systems are extended to spaces that were previously unconditioned. When either of these two events occur, the envelope and lighting requirements of the prescriptive standard apply to the increased conditioned space only.
