The 55-gallon drum will be placed inside a completely enclosed 5'x 12' exhausted enclosure where the distillation operations will take place. Distillation: BTBAS will be transferred from the drum through a closed piping system to a 50-liter double-contained, stainless steel glass-lined still. BTBAS will be distilled and then transferred through a closed piping system from the 50-liter still into 200-liter collection vessels. The collection vessels will be double- contained stainless steel, glass-lined vessels. Transfer& Packaging: BTBAS will be transferred through a Nitrogen/Helium vacuum/purge closed piping system from the collection vessels into individual 1.2-liter & 11-liter stainless steel containers. The transfer/packaging operation will occur in a purged/inerted (Nitrogen/Helium] environment inside a fume hood enclosure. Once filled, the 1.2-liter & 11-liter vessels will be transferred to Room 330C, an existing H-3/H-7 flammable liquids storage room. Fire Protection: A CO2 automatic fire extinguishing system will protect both the distillation exhausted enclosure and packaging fume hood. Containment: Distillation Exhausted Enclosure: The 5' x 12' distillation exhausted enclosure will be provided with >1= 4" deep local containment [>1=19.8 cubic feet], capable of containing more than 147 gallons (0.134 cf per gallon], nearly 3 times the volume of the, largest vessel in the enclosure. [NOTE: No fire protection water inside the enclosure - thus, containment for 20-minute sprinkler system discharge is not required.] Packaging Fume Hood: The packaging fume' hood will have containment capacity sufficient to contain more than the volume of the largest container filled at any time [11-liter vessel]. Vessels: Vessels will be double-contained, stainless steel, glass lined vessels. Explosion Control: Explosion control will be provided for the BTBAS operations by the following engineering controls: Exhaust Ventilation: Exhaust ventilation will be maintained in the distillation exhausted enclosure and packaging fume hood sufficient to maintain flammable vapors at </0.0013%, well below 25% of the LFL/LEL of 0.125%. Inert/Purged Environment: Both distillation and packaging operations will be under purged/inerted conditions using Nitrogen and Helium as purge and push gases. Water: The distillation exhausted enclosure and packaging fume hood will be designed to prevent the intrusion of water, because BTBAS in contact with water is the condition that can generate the evolution of flammable vapors. CO2: CO2 automatic fire extinguishing system protection will be provided in both the distillation exhausted enclosure and the packaging fume hood. I II t I . Li Eriksen-Rattan Associates Inc. Valves: General: * Piping system to contain a sufficient number of manual control valves & check valves to operate system properly and to protect the area under both normal & emergency conditions. * Piping in connection with pumps to contain sufficient number of valves to control liquid flow in normal operation and in the event of physical damage or fire exposure. Emergency Shutoff Valves: Identified and location visible and indicated by a sign. Backflow Prevention/Check Valves: Provided when backflow could create a hazardous condition or cause unauthorized discharge. Drainage Control Valves: Manual drainage-control valves to be located remote from containment area/drainage system such that they can be operated in a fire condition.
