F-rating, I-rating or complying with UBC
Standard 43-1, depending on their sizes,
combustibility and whether the
penetrations are in walls above.
B. MEMBRANE-PENETRATIONS (through only one
side of an assembly):
Fire-resistive walls (whether bearing or
not and whether requiring fire protected
openings or not) shall have penetrations
protected with membrane-penetration fire
stops having an F-rating or complying
with UBC Standard 43-1, depending on
their size and combustibility. Limited
steel electrical outlet boxes (not
exceeding 16 sq. in., nor more than 100
sq. in. for any 100 sq. ft. of wall)
require no protection.
Fire-resistive ceilings shall have no
penetrations, except for noncombustible
sprinkler pipes and steel electrical
outlet boxes as described above.
NOTE: The plans should indicate the various
fire-stop ratings required for all
penetrations.

limited to, the preparation of a hazardous material management plan (HMMP); chemical analysis;
recommendations for methods of isolation, separation, containment or protection of hazardous
materials or processes. The technical report shall contain a listing of quantities and classification of all
hazardous materials which will be stored, dispensed, handled, or used on the premises.

An automatic fire sprinkler system shall be installed in occupancies and locations as set
forth in UFC 10.306 and the Carlsbad Municipal Code. The Carlsbad Municipal Code requirements
for location of fire extinguishing systems are as follows:
In buildings two or more stories in height, an autojnatic fire extinguishing system shall be installed
in those areas which lie below the lowest elevation of fire department vehicular access.
An automatic fire extinguishing system shall be installed in all buildings hereafter constructed in
which the aggregate floor area exceeds 10,000 square feet, or in which the existing aggregate floor
area is expanded to exceed 10,000 square feet.
An automatic fire extinguishing system conforming to either NFPA standards 13 or 13R shall be
installed in all one or two story apartment houses and other buildings which contain fewer than 16
attached dwelling units and have an aggregate floor area which exceeds 10,000 square feet.
Note: Residential sprinkler systems such as those designed in accordance with NFPA standards
13R and 13D may not be used as the basis for increases to the basic allowable floor area or
exemption from any other Uniform Building Code requirement.

When approved by the building official, exit doors in Group B, Division 2 Occupancies may be
equipped with approved listed special egress-control devices of the time-delay type, provided the
building is protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system and an approved
automatic smoke-detection system. Such devices shall conform to all of the conditions stated in
UBC 3304(e).
Deficiency Item: Pe n In g 25 Exit Signs
Exit signs shall be installed at required exit doorways and where otherwise necessary to clearly
indicate the direction of egress when the exit serves an occupant load of 50 or more.
Illumination: Signs shall be internally or externally illuminated by two electric lamps or shall be of an
approved self-luminous type.
Power Supply: Current supply to one of the lamps for exit signs shall be provided by the premises'
wiring system. Power to the other lamp shall be from storage batteries or an on-site generator set.
Deficiency Item: Pending 26 Exit Illumination
Exits shall be illuminated at any time the building is occupied with light having intensity of not less
than 1 footcandle at floor level. The power supply for exit illumination shall normally be provided by
the premises'wiring system. In the event of its failure, illumination shall be automatically provided
from an emergency system of Group I, Division 1 Occupancies and for all other occupancies where
the exiting system serves an occupant load of 100 or more.

Walls of corridors serving a GroupR, Division 1 or Group I Occupancy having an occupant load of 10
or more and walls of corridors serving other occupancies having an occupant load of 30 or more shall
be of not less than one-hour fire-resistive construction and the ceilings shall be not less than that
required for a one-hour fire-resistive floor or roof system.
Exception for Offices: Corridor walls and ceilings need not be of fire-resistive construction. within
office spaces having an occupant load of 100 or less when the entire story in which the space is
located is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system throughout and when the corridor has a listed
supervised, low voltage smoke detector system installed.

Storage in closely packed piles shall not exceed 15 feet in height, 12 feet on pallets or in

stored. Show compliance with Article 81 of the Uniform Fire Code.
