A. WALKS AND SIDEWALKS (SFC 2 1323)
|. Walks and iidewallct shall have a continuous com-
mon surface not interrupted by slept or by abrupt
changes in level exceeding ^ inch and shall be a
minimum ot 48 inches in width
2. Surfaces with a slope o( less than b percent gradient
shall be at least as slip resistant is that described as
a medium salted finish
3 Surfaces with a slope of 6 percent gradient or greater

4. Surface cross slopes shall not exceed V4 inch per foot
5. Walks, sidewalks and pedestrian ways shall be free

8. Walks shall be provided with a level area not less
than 60 inches by 60 inches at a door or gate that
swings toward the walk, and not less than 43 inches
wide by 44 inches deep at a door or gate that swings
away from the walk. Such walks shall extend 24
inches to the side of the strike edge of a door or gate
that swings toward the walk
9. All walks with continuous gradients shall have level
areas at least 5 feet in length at intervals of at lease
every 400 feet.
B. HAZARDS (SEC. 2-3324)
1. Warning curbs. Abrupt changes in level, except
between a walk or sidewalk and an adjacent street
or driveway, exceeding 4 inches in a vertical dimen-
sion, such as at planters or fountains located in or
adjacent to walks, sidewalks, or other pedestrian
ways, shall be identified by curbs projecting at least
6 inches in height above the walk or sidewalk surface
to wirn the blind of a potential drop off. When a
guardrail or handrail is provided, no curb is required
when a guidcrail is provided centered 3 inches (plus
or minus one inch) above the surface of the walk or
sidewalk, the walk is 5 percent or less gradient or
no adjacent hazard exists
2. Overhanging Obstructions Any obstructions that
overhangs a pedestrian's way shall be a minimum of
80 inches above the walking surface as measured
from the bottom of the obstruction.

handicapped shall not exceed W inch per foot in
any direction
5. Entrances to and vertical clearances within parking
structures shall have a minimum vertical clearance
of 8 feet 2 inches where required for accessibility
to handicapped parking spaces
6. Handicap parking identification signs shall be
provided as required by Section 2-7102(e) in the
following locations

D. SANITARY FACILITIES (SEC. 2-1711)
1.) Where separate facilities are provided for non-handi-
capped persons of each sex, separate facilities shall
provided for handicapped persons of each sex
also. Where unisex facilities are provided for non-
handicappcd persons, such unisex facilities shall be
provided for the handicapped.
Where sanitary facilities are located on accessible
floors of a building, they shall be made accessible to
, the physically handicapped.
/ (5) Passageways leading to sanitary facilities shall have a

compartment has an end opening door (facing

facility may have the water closet fixture located in
a compartment which provides a clear space of not
less than 36 inches wide by 48 inches long in front
of the water closet
Crab bars located on each side, or one side of the
back of the physically handicapped toilet stall or
compartment shall be securely attached 33 inches
above and parallel to the floor Grab bars at the side
shall be at least 42 inches long with the front end
positioned 24 inches in front of the water closet
stool and grab bars at the back shall be not less than
36 inches long
The diameter or width of the gripping surfaces of a
grab bar shall be 114 inch to IVi inch or the shape
shall provide an equivalent gripping surface. If grab
bars are mounted adjacent to a wall, the space be-
tween the wall and the grab bars shall be 1 Vt inches
A dear floor space 30 inches by 48 inches shall be
provided in front of a lavatory to allow a forward
approach Such clear floor space shall adjoin or
overlap an accesible route and shall extend into knee
and toe space underneath the lavatory
Where urinals are provided, at least one shall have a

E. ^ATER CLOSETS (SEC. P-1S02)
The height of accessible water dotets shall be a min-
imum of 17 inches and a maximum of 19 inches
measured to the top of the toilet seat Flush controls
shall be operable by an oscillating handle with a
maximum operating force of 3 Jb or by a remote
low voltage button The handle or button shall be
located so they are operable without requiring
excessive body movement.
F. URINALS (SEC P-l 503)
1. Where urinals are provided at least one elongated
rim at a maximum of 17 inches above the floor u

stream from the bubbler shall be substantially

positioned so as not to encroach into pedestrian
ways.
L DOORS & HARDWARE (SEC 2-3301 3303. 3306)
1./Allp primary entrances to buildings shall be made
^accessible to the handicapped.
Hand activated door opening hardware shall be
centered between 30 inches and 44 inches above the
floor. Latching and locking doors that arc hand acti-
vated and which are in a path of travel, shall be oper-
able with a single effort by lever type hardware, by
panic bars, push pull activating bars, or other hard-
ware designed to provide passage without requiring
the ability to grasp the opening hardware Locked
exit doors shall operate as above m egress direction.
Doors to individual hotel or motel units shall oper-
ate similarly, except that when bolt and unlatching
operation is key operated from corridor or extcnor
side of unit door, large bow keys (2 inch) full bow or
1U inch (half bow) shall be provided in lieu of lever
type hardware on the corridor side. Separate dead
lock, activation on room side of corridor doors in
hotels or motels shall have lever handle or large
thumb turn in an easily reached location.
3. Width and Heights. 1. Every required exit doorway
shall be of a size as to permit the installation of a
door not less than 3 feet in width and not less than
6 feet, 8 inches in height. When installed in exit
doorways, exit doors shall be capable of opening at
least 90 degrees and shall be so mounted that the
clear width of the exitway is not less than 32 inches.
4. For hinged doors, the opening width shall be mea-
sured with the door positioned at an angle of 90
degrees from its closed position. At least one of a
pair of doors shall meet this opening width require-
ment. Revolving doors shall not be used as a required
--entrance for the physically handicapped

6. Construction The bottom 10 inches of all doors
except automatic and sliding shall have t smooth
uninterrupted surface to allow the door to be
opened by a wheelchair footrcit without creating a
trap or hazardous condition Where narrow frame
doors are used, a 10 inch high smooth panel shall be
installed on the push side of the door, which will
allow the door to be opened by a wheelchair footrcit
without creating a trap or hazardous condition
7. Thresholds shall not exceed Vi inch in height.
8. Where turnstiles are used a door or gate that n
accessible to the handicapped shall be provided
within 30 fnl.

' 10. The width of the required level area on the aid*
into which the door swings shall extend 24 inches
put the strike edge far exterior door* and 18
inches past the strike edge for interior doors.
II. The space between two consecutive door openings
in a vestibule serving other than a required
exit stairway shall provide a minimum of 48
inches of clear space from any door opening into
the vestibule when the door is open 90°. Doors
into a vestibule shell swing in the same direc-
tion or they both shall swing away from the
vestibule.
J. CORRIDORS AND EXIT BALCONIES (SEC. 2-3304)
1. Corridors that exceed 200 feet In length shall
a. Have a minimum clear width of 60 inches,
b. Have at a central location, a 60 inch x
60 inch minimum wheelchair turning/passing
space, or
e. Have at a central location, an intervening
cross corridor (minimum 44"), or
d. Have at a central location, an openabla

K. STAIRWAYS (SEC. 2-3305)
1. Handrails shall extend a nimnua of 12 inches
beyond the top nosing and 12 inches plus the
tread width beyond the hotton nosing.
2. The handgrip portion of handrails shall be not
less than 1-1/4 inches nor more than 2 inches
JUi cross-sectional dimension or the shape shall
provide an equivalent gripping surface and shall
have a smooth surface with no sharp corners.
3. The upper approach and the lower tread of each
interior stair and every tread of exterior
stairs shall be marked by a strip of clearly con-
trasting color, at least 2 inches vide, placed
parallel to, and not more than 1 inch from the
nose of the step or landing to alert the visually
impaired. (Applies to stairs with 2 or more risers)
4. Open stairways are not permitted. Risers shall
be sufficiently solid to prevent the passage of
objects larger than 1/4 inch.
J. Tread surfaces shall be slip-resistant and shell
h««e smooth, rounded or chamfered exposed edges.

blind or partially sighted persons can identify
as required by Section 2-5103(e) 2.0. and E.
6. Wheelchair lifts shall comply with Sec. 2-5104.
N. REFUGE AREAS (SEC. 2-3302(g}) (FIRE MARSHAL REGULATED
OCCUPANCIES)
1. Every multi-story building where access is pro-
vided for the physically handicapped shall have
designated (signed) rooms or areas on each floor
to provide safe refuge for the handicapped.
Refuge areas are not required on stories opening
